Beloved big league gaming documentary, the King of Kong, is getting remade as a mockumentary?
What?
Indiewire talked to Seth Gordon recently and one of the take-away quotes was about how plans are still going ahead for his debut flick to get a dramatic, scripted do-over. Initially, it was going to be a straight dramatization of the gamer vs. gamer drama. However, after getting some bolts of inspiration during his guest-directing turns on the Office and Modern Family, Gordon’s gotten the idea to execute it in the same mock-doc style that’s so seemingly ubiquitous for TV sitcoms these days.
So basically they’re going to re-stage the whole thing so it’s more interesting?
Power to ‘em. It could probably work, although it’s a little bit of a head-scratcher. I don’t know, I’m always a little amused whenever a documentary gets treated in the same turns as your regular movie franchise. Like when I watched Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer on DVD and it had a Monster trailer in the front to tip off anybody who wanted more of the same story, but with sharper drama or sexier ladies. Having gone to high school with honest-to-goodness pro gamer, I can almost picture them doing a more contemporary reboot about LAN-trained Counter Strike competitors to correspond to Gordon’s WarGames remake, too.
