King Of Kong To Be Remade As Sexier Mockumentary?

Maybe they'll throw a CG DK himself into it, too?

Beloved big league gaming documentary, the King of Kong, is getting remade as a mockumentary?

What?

Indiewire talked to Seth Gordon recently and one of the take-away quotes was about how plans are still going ahead for his debut flick to get a dramatic, scripted do-over. Initially, it was going to be a straight dramatization of the gamer vs. gamer drama. However, after getting some bolts of inspiration during his guest-directing turns on the Office and Modern Family, Gordon’s gotten the idea to execute it in the same mock-doc style that’s so seemingly ubiquitous for TV sitcoms these days.

So basically they’re going to re-stage the whole thing so it’s more interesting?

Power to ‘em. It could probably work, although it’s a little bit of a head-scratcher. I don’t know, I’m always a little amused whenever a documentary gets treated in the same turns as your regular movie franchise. Like when I watched Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer on DVD and it had a Monster trailer in the front to tip off anybody who wanted more of the same story, but with sharper drama or sexier ladies. Having gone to high school with honest-to-goodness pro gamer, I can almost picture them doing a more contemporary reboot about LAN-trained Counter Strike competitors to correspond to Gordon’s WarGames remake, too.

Unless it is a total lesbian porn flick where the girls are banging each other with sex toys, there is no fucking reason this movie should be made, hell there is no reason the original should have been made. I hated the original, never have I watch a film where I wanted to drive to where these people were at, and kill them with my bare hands.

I am up for a gamer mockumentary, even focusing on the same subject matter of arcade gamers, but the same story? Seems pointless and unnecessary to me.

Why make a mockumentary based off of the actual true events that you documented on film already? Nothing about this makes sense.

Should I watch the original? I know of it, seen clips of it, but have never watched it.

If they make it so the actors playing Wiebe and Mitchell are playing DK64, I'm in.

I hear the original was borderline mock. Considering how they altered and misrepresented scenes all over the place. At least, if you believe Billy's side of the story, and I do.

I kind of enjoyed the original and it had a bit of excitement and drama to it... so why do they need to make a mockumentary of it.

So, when is Screened gonna start reviewing porns, anyways?

They made a gamer mockumentary. It was called Gamers and it was awful. Learn from their example and nip this in the bud.

Sounds great. Only if by Mockumentary they mean "Frost Nixon" not "The Office." Meaning it's filmed as a documentary, but is fake. Not stupid jokes and hijinks going on.

The director of King of Kong said that Billy appears much nicer in the film than he is in real life, and described him in person as "evil and manipulative." I'd love to see that stressed in fake film form.

@MadClawMannn:  When the original was being screened at HotDocs in 2007 before it's wide release, a friend working for Alliance Atlantis had heard that the dramatization rights had already been purchased.  As such while we were watching it we couldn't help but try and cast it.  Sadly I still think it will end up being a Ben Stiller flick like Dodgeball, as Billy Mitchell seemed like the basis for Stiller's character in that one.

I think our brief discussions ended up something like this;

Billy Mitchell - Ben Stiller
Steve Wiebe - Will Ferrel
Walter Day - Christopher Walken

What the shit is the point of this? Why do people want to unnecessarily remake films, like that whole thing with some asshole wanting to remake Troll Hunter right after it was released? Movie people, you make me so mad!

I would say yes. I found it enjoyable and interesting, and it's not a terribly long movie. It was on Netflix streaming at some point, not sure if it still is.
