Alright, I know I got some slack last time for writing an entire piece about a poster, but I think we need to talk about this. Partially because I love Paul Thomas Anderson and therefore, besides The Dark Knight Rises (tomorrow!) this is one of my most anticipated movies of the year, and I want to discuss anything related to this new movie. I also think it must be noted that it is truly an original poster.
The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, as a man who leads a faith based "cult" that begins to get popular in America. Joaquin Phoenix stars alongside him as Hoffman's right hand man and a guy who begins to become very ingrained organization. There has been a lot of controversy about the fact that the movie was inspired by Scientology in some forms, but I think I would rather let all of that go and just focus on the story of this movie, because it looks to be fascinating.
The poster seems to indicate some of the themes of the film, and I wonder if it will explore the question of "Is the glass half full or half empty?" I would venture to guess, yes. It also is reported that alcohol and "consumed" substances are a huge part of the storyline so this seems very fitting. However, I think this poster is of note, because more than anything, I always appreciate it when the marketing doesn't resort to close up pictures of their "stars" and gets more creative. I like the fact that they are selling it more on concept than actors and feel like it is a good sign for the film. Is it October 12th, yet?
