Fred Dekker Director previously directed Night of the Creeps

Count Dracula forms an alliance with other legendary evil creatures in a bid to shift the balance of power in their favor. All that stands in their way is a group of prepubescents known as "The Monster Squad".

Trivia:

The version released on DVD differs slightly compared to an alternate release in circulation on VHS before its release. The following scenes were removed for the DVD release: 1. A scene where Phoebe tells her mother that her P.T.A does not approve of the shows she watches because they contain "too much sex". 2. Banter between the Cargo Pilots shipping Dracula's casket. 3. Right after the movie ends and right before the credits begin, a music-video style montage would play to the Monster Squad theme song, showcasing scenes from the movie.

Synopsis

Every 100 years, the ultimate battle between Good and Evil is waged over a magical amulet. This amulet, though normally indestructible, becomes vulnerable at the stroke of midnight on the 100th year. While in its vulnerable state, the amulet gains the power to banish evil from the world. Tonight, the famous monster hunter Abraham Van Helsing descends upon Castle Dracula with a band of freedom fighters. Van Helsing seeks to use the amulet against the legendary vampire.

They fail.

Now modern day (1987), a young boy named Sean, along with his best friend Patrick, run a "Monster Club" out of their tree house. Sean's mother Emily was lucky enough to score Abraham Van Helsing's diary at a garage sale - only problem is, it's completely in German. Sean comes from a broken home: His father, Del Crenshaw, is a cop, a fact that does not sit well with his mother. Sean's father is rarely home, and when he does get home, it's usually very late at night. Del is stressed out, too - in the same night, he had to deal with both a violent man claiming to be a Werewolf and a Mummy being stolen from the local museum exhibit. If that wasn't bad enough, a man going by the name of "Alucard" has been asking if he could buy Abraham Van Helsing's diary. It doesn't take long for Sean to realize that "Alucard" is actually "Dracula" spelled backwards.

Knowing that something supicious is going on, Sean reforms the Monster Club in to "The Monster Squad", and decide to face their first fear: confronting a "Scary German Guy" who lives down the street, in an effort to get Van Helsing's diary translated. They learn that Scary German Guy isn't so scary after all, and he relays the contents of the diary to them. It details Van Helsing's quest for the amulet, and his trek to Dracula's castle. Van Helsing's plan was to recite an ancient incantation, transcribed in the diary, to use the amulet to trap Dracula in limbo, a realm from which there is no escape. The final entry in the diary ends on the night they are to storm the castle - almost 100 years ago to the day. Sean and his friends are suddenly facing the very real possibility that Dracula and the other monsters are now here to find the amulet and destroy it once and for all. Their suspicions are confirmed when they arrive home to discover Sean's little sister Phoebe has befriended a very real Frankenstein's Monster - originally sent by Dracula to kill Sean and take the diary. Phoebe has instead brought out Frank's more tender side, and the slow-witted creature joins their cause in the coming battle against Dracula.

The next day, the Monster Squad spend a training montage preparing for the battle later that night: Rudy melts down silverware to make silver bullets, sharpens wooden stakes in shop class, Eugene writes a letter to the Military asking for help, Sean prints "Monster Squad" business cards, and steals his father's revolver. All they need now is a virgin to read the German incantation, a task that falls to Patrick's reluctant sister. The group infiltrate Dracula's residence on Shadowbrook Road. Inside, they encounter the Wolfman and stumble upon a secret compartment in the basement of the house, containing the fabled amulet. They steal it, but not before narrowly escaping Dracula himself (thanks in part to Scary German Guy showing up at the last second to provide a getaway car). When a run-in with The Mummy leaves the monster an unraveled pile of bones by the side of the road, the Monster Squad regroups back in town at the local Church - only to find its doors have been locked. The rest of the monsters soon catch up, and Patrick's sister is forced to attempt the incantation in the middle of the street, while the rest of the Monster Squad runs interference. When the lengthy incantation is finished and nothing happens, we learn that Patrick's sister may have lied about being a virgin.

Reciting the incantation then falls on the only other female with them: Sean's little sister, Phoebe. Scary German Guy walks her through the incantation as the rest of the Squad continues to deal with the ever encroaching threat: Rudy manages to shoot the Wolfman with a silver bullet, Horace gets hold of a shotgun and plugs The Creature from the Black Lagoon in the chest, and Frankenstein's Monster impales Dracula on the ornate fence surrounding the Church in an effort to protect Phoebe. As she finishes the incantation, the amulet begins to glow intensely bright. Scary German Guy throws the amulet as hard as he can, as a massive swirling vortex opens. The dead bodies of the Wolfman and Gillman are pulled in, along with several cars and other pieces of debris. Everybody else holds on as tight as they can, as to not be sucked in to the vortex with everything else. For all of his strength, Frankenstein's monster can do nothing to fight against the vortex; he eventually succumbs to it, given Phoebe's stuffed bear as a final parting gift from the girl he befriended. Only one monster remains: Dracula, who ambushes Sean; If he's going to spend an eternity in limbo, he's not going in there alone. However, somehow, from out of the vortex, Van Helsing appears and grabs Dracula, forcefully dragging him in and giving Sean a thumbs up as he vanishes with the Vampire in to the ether.

The vortex closes. The monsters are gone. As the good guys look around to survey the damage, a battalion of soldiers and several tanks roll in to the now trashed city square. As it turns out, the Army got Eugene's letter, and are here to help. When they discover that they are a little late to the party, the cigar-chomping General asks, frustrated: "Can somebody tell me what in the sam hill is going on here?!"

"Well, we can, sir." says Sean.

"Who are you?" asks the General.

"We're the Monster Squad."
