Based on the memoirs of Wladyslaw Spielman, The Pianist was nominated for seven academy awards, winning three, and won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2002. Roman Polanski was unable to attend awards ceremonies in the United States due to his standing arrest warrant for the rape of a minor.
