Christmas eve, and a boy (Hero boy) is lying in bed. He can hear through his door his little sister talking to his parents about how he doesn't believe in Santa anymore. Hero boy then gets out a folder and examines the evidence he's gathered of Santa's non-existence. He hears his parents coming and dives into bed and pretends to be asleep. He falls asleep and is waken at 11:55pm by the sound of a train. He runs to the window and sees a train pulling up outside. In his haste to grab his dressing gown, he tears a whole in his pocket.
He heads outside and is greeted by a man coming off the train. He proposes if Hero Boy is coming with him to the North Pole. Hero Boy declines, but changes his mind as the train starts to leave and jumps on. He makes his way to the passenger cabin and takes a seat. The conductor comes by and asks for his ticket. He finds one in his pocket and the man punches in a 'B' and an 'E' into it. The boy puts it back in his pocket. They come across the last house and Hero Boy can see the boy outside refusing to get on the train. When the train starts to move, the boy starts to run for it, but falls down. Hero Boy then grabs the emergency stop and the boy gets on, but stays in the rear cabin.
The conductor comes by asking who did it and why. Hero Boy explains and the conductor keeps the train going. Waiters bring out hot chocolate with a song and a dance. The girl hides a cup under her seat. Once the waiters leave, she picks up the cup and the conductor takes her to the rear cabin to give the cup to the boy in the back. Hero Boy then realises that the girl hasn't had her ticket clipped, so he tries to deliver it to her, but fails between the cabins and it flies away. The conductor then asks where her ticket is (to clip it). She can't find it and he takes her to the back of the train. One of the other kids tell Hero boy that she's going to be thrown off the train. As Hero Boy reaches for the emergency break again, he notices the girl's ticket has made it's way back into the train and caught on the vent grate. He grabs the ticket and heads to the back of the train, but the girl and the Conductor are nowhere to be seen.
Hero Boy then notices the conductor's light and the conductor and girl's shadows on a rock wall the train is passing by. Hero Boy then climbs onto the top of the train and tries to hunt them down. But he can't catch up. That's when he runs into a homeless man who claims to always ride the Polar Express. The homeless man then tell Hero Boy that they're about to go down a steep decline heading towards a tunnel. The homeless man puts on some skies and puts Hero Boy on the skies too. They ski down the train on the decline and the boy dives into the coal car and the homeless man disappears.
Hero Boy then discovers the girl is running the train while the two drivers fix a light on the front. However, soon the drivers see something on the tracks and orders the train to stop. It stops just in time for the drivers to find out there's caribou on the tracks. They then discover they can replicate a caribou cry by pulling on one of the driver's beards. This causes the Caribou to get out of the way and they head off.
Soon, they come across some inclines and declines, and the kids and conductor find themselves on the front of the train, stuck there to ride the steepest incline on the route as the drivers lose one of the mechanism's necessary for the brakes. They ride down the slope and end up on a frozen lake with the tracks under the ice. The conductor finds another pin for the brakes and they stop on the ice. They then realise that the ice is cracking behind them, so they head full speed over the ice to try to line up with the tracks over the other side of the lake.
They make it and then realise they're almost at the North Pole. When they finally get there, everyone leaves the train except for the little boy in the back. Hero Boy and Hero Girl climb into the back car, but accidentally detach the back car. They then find themselves heading backwards down a steep hill.
The train finally comes to stop on a turn-table and the k ids climb out. They make their way down the tracks heading towards jingling bells, which Hero Boy is unable to hear. He follows blindly and find themselves in the 'Naughty or Nice decision room'. They see some elves use a transport system an d follow suit. They end up chasing a present down a conveyor belt into a giant sack of presents. The sack then fires off rockets which grapple onto a flying carrier craft above. The craft then lifts them up in the sack and they end up by a giant Christmas tree in the city square. The elves then make it known that they knew the kids were in there. They slide down the sack and rejoin the group. Santa's reindeer then are brought out to be tied to the sleigh. There are bells on the ropes, but Hero Boy still can't hear them.
Santa then comes out and chooses Hero Boy to receive the first present of Christmas, after he finally believes in Santa and can hear the bells. He chooses the bell to be his present and they all get back on the train after Santa sets out on his sleigh. The Conductor then punches more letters in Hero Boy's ticket to spell out 'Believe'. Hero Boy then realises, when in the train, he put the bell in the pocket with a hole in it. They reach Hero Boy's house and he heads inside after saying his goodbyes. He heads to bed and wakes up the next morning. He grabs his dressing gown and tears the pocket more. He runs downstairs and after opening all his presents, he finds one last small one. Inside is the bell and a message from Santa telling Hero Boy he found the bell in his sleigh. His parents can't hear the bell, but he always will.
"At one time, most of my friends could hear the bell, but as years passed, it fell silent for all of them. Even Sarah found one Christmas that she could no longer hear its sweet sound. Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe."
