The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Wes Anderson Director previously directed Rushmore

Another one of Wes Anderson's surrealistic look at family relationships, filled with striking characters and even more striking performances by an amazing ensemble cast. The Royal Tenenbaums follows a family created and destroyed by an ever-conniving patriarchal presence.

Trivia:

Wes Anderson and Andrew Wilson provided the voices for the commentators during Richie Tenenbaum’s tennis match.

Plot

The Royal Tenenbaums is about three children who seemed to be incredibly gifted as children on a trajectory towards great success, only to come crashing back to earth as deeply unhappy adults. Chas Tenenbaum ( Ben Stiller ) is a panicked and paranoid business owner, Richie Tenenbaum ( Luke Wilson ) is a washed up tennis player who is in love with his sister, Margot Tenenbaum ( Gwyneth Paltrow ), a depressed playwright. Margot is married to Raleigh St. Clair ( Bill Murray ), a psychologist and author, but is having an affair with an old family friend, and novelist, Eli Cash ( Owen Wilson ). The children are brought back together when their father announces he has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Lying about the disease, Royal Tenenbaum ( Gene Hackman ), their arrogant ass of a father, uses the ruse in a desperate attempt to bring the family back together, and get his wife ( Anjelica Huston ) back from her new love interest ( Danny Glover ) before he dies.
