A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter so that Jack can work on a new novel. However, there is an evil presence there that influences the father into violence, while his psychic son, who has the Shining, sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.

Trivia:

The scene where Dick Hallorann tells Danny what shining is was shot 148 times, a world record for individual takes in a movie.
