Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle have formed a legion of friends named the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Comprised of only them, the girls are banded together with the common goal of earning their cutie marks: symbols that appear on the hinds of ponies that represent a found special talent or life purpose. (If only it was that easy.) Willing to help them out, Applejack lets them use her old clubhouse; which has seen better days. So while Scootaloo is out drawing up a reference map of the town, the other two stay behind and fix up the place. Once fixed up, the girls make a plan (and even a theme song) for the day; which they hope will give them their much desired cutie marks.

Ugh... talent shows. I have bad memories regarding talent shows. I really do.

The girls roam around Ponyville trying out different activities: including underwater exploring, hair styling, mountain climbing, and taffy pulling. Among others, they fail at each of these and always walk away with a blank flank. (See what I did there?) Eventually, they find their way to the town's library, where they are later greeted by Twilight Sparkle and their school teacher, Cheerilee. Twilight suggests that instead of trying things that they have zero experience in, they should try finding their cutie marks through doing things they already know. Cheerilee agrees; suggesting that they star in the Ponyville talent show. The girls are thrilled to do it, and decide that they should do the show together as a group.

The girls get to work on rock show based on their theme song, but assign themselves to tasks they have little, if any, familiarity with. In fact, their objectives are mixed up; always suited better for another pony. Apple Bloom, who has shown earlier through her work on the clubhouse that she is wonderful at construction and renovation, thinks that her knowledge of kung-fu are enough for her to put together the choreography. Scootaloo, whose grace and agility is more suited for that task, instead puts herself in charge of writing the song and singing it; a job better suited for Sweetie Belle who, looking up to Rarity, prefers to put together the costumes and sets. Though it is apparent that this show will not end well, the girls carry on with their preparations with great enthusiasm.

At the night of the show, the girls are set to be the last to perform. Twilight arrives backstage to wish them good luck but is surprised to hear that the girls had appointed themselves roles way outside their comfort zones; going against what Twilight had suggested earlier. The rock show commences, which feature the girls in neon spandex and demonic make-up. Predictably, everything goes wrong. Scootaloo's singing and writing are downright atrocious, Sweetie Belle's designs & effects are haphazard, and Apple Bloom's choreography is poorly executed. At the end, the stunned audience burst into laughter, embarrassing the girls.

Additional awards were given out for the special "Best Parody of the 1980s" category.

The girls reluctantly show back up on stage for the awards; where they are given the award for best comedy act. Though this wasn't their intention, they graciously accept the award. But their enthusiasm drains when they learn that, despite their best efforts, they are still without their cutie marks: but this time around, they know why. They tell Twilight that they've learned that they shouldn't have forced themselves to try something not meant for them, they should've 'embraced' the talents they already knew they had; though they now think it's comedy.
