Overview

The Simpsons is an American animated television series created by Matt Groening. It is the longest-running American sitcom, cartoon and entertainment series and has won numerous awards.

Characters

The show centers around the dysfunctional Simpson family, made up of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

History

In 1986, Matt Groening had been called to pitch an idea for a series of animated shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show. Groening originally intended to present his Life in Hell comic strip, but decided against this when he found out he'd lose his publishing rights to the series. Instead, there and then in producer James L. Brooks' lobby, Groening quickly sketched out five characters: The Simpsons. He named them after his own family, replacing his own name with "Bart", an anagram of "brat".

The concept he had created first appeared in animated form on April 19, 1987. Groening had assumed that the animators would clean up his drawings so he submitted crude sketches which the animators simply re-traced. This lead to the poor animation in the original sketches. The shorts lasted for three seasons on The Tracey Ullman Show before they were turned into the full half-hour show on Fox.
