The benchmark of bad parenting for more than 20 years, Homer Simpson, has been named the best TV/Film character ever in a new survey. Not like forever ever, mind you, but the last 20 years. 
 
Entertainment Weekly's latest issue ranks the top 100 characters from TV and Film, and Homer beat out the likes of Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Silence of the Lambs' Hannibal Lecter, Edward Scissorhands, and Heath Ledger's The Joker. 
 
Seems like a pretty safe choice, though certainly a warranted one. Even if the show weren't still chugging along, that magical period of near-transcendental comedic quality found in seasons 2 through 10 pretty much would have made him a shoe-in, regardless.
 
Me personally? My vote would be for Deadwood's Al Swearingen. What say you, Screened community?

Homer fucking rocks! I don't care if the newer seasons aren't that great. The older seasons are comedy GOLD!

Jack Shepard. The arch his character went through was so natural and totally in line with him as he evolved.

I would have voted for the Joker. Home/The Simpsons became boring to me years ago, then Family Guy was funny for a while, but that got boring too.

They should have called this list "100 Most Iconic Characters of the Past 20 Years."
 
My vote would be for either Tony Soprano or Stringer Bell.

What is really funny is that the first few seasons of the Simpson's focused on Bart, not Homer.  So 20 years ago, people might have said Bart, not Homer.  The writers made Homer more lazy and stupid and therefore funnier.  So, I think it is a good choice.

I have a hard time thinking of a more dynamic, appealing and tragic character on Television in the last 20 years than Omar Little.

I' m glad to hear I am not the only one who thought Family Guy was boring. 
 
My vote? As much as I liked Al Swearigen, I'm going to say Gollum. He steals every scene he is in and has spawned countless impersonations.

Iconic sure, best? no way.
Homer became a total caricature of himself a long time ago.
In saying that ive no idea who id pick myself, although Jack Shepard was a good pick.

Homer is, sort of the safe choice. I'd vote Homer, Even though the newer seasons has decreased in quality, the earlier stuff, is godlike. i don't know who else i could choose, Dale Cooper?
