A group of friends have heard that in the back water of Texas people graves are being vandalized, Sally and her wheelchair bound brother Franklin take friends for a road trip to their grandfathers grave site to inspect the damage and along the way encounter a series of horrorfying events, beginning with a Hitch-Hiker with a penchant for cutting himself to a chainsaw wielding maniac.
From the moment they entered a roadside fried food and gas station the group are hunted by the evil Hewitt Family, a group of nightmarish cannibalistic freaks lead by Grandpa Hewitt. The story of the family begins many years ago when Charlie Hewitt the patriach of the family was a POW during the Korean war. There he was forced to consume the flesh of a fellow soldier to survive, developing a taste for cooked human flesh he arrived back in the USA and introduced the taste to his family. It was here that the terrible beginnings of a deranged and mentally insane family began.
The group discover that the gas station is empty and awaiting a fuel truck delivery, choosing to come back and wait the group head out to check out a local swimming hole. Kirk, Sally's boyfriend, leads the charge and decides to ask a local homestead if they have fuel. Leaving the group Kirk and Sally head out to the homestead, Sally waits on the steps as Kirk enters the house seeking to find the owners but only to find Leatherface, one of the brothers of the family, he enters from a small room and slashes Kirk down dragging him through a door and slamming it shut behind them. Sally hearing the noise follows and finds the house of horrors where everything is created from bones and skin, feathers everywhere and a smell of rotting flesh, trying to flee the house Sally is captured by Leatherface and dragged to the back room to be kept later for a special family feast.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre was loosely based on the events surrounding Ed Gein the Cannibal and flesh wearing psychopath famous for digging up graves and creating "outfits" for himself out of the skinned flesh of dead bodies.
