Carol Reed Director previously directed The Fallen Idol

After arriving in Vienna, pulp novelist Holly Martins attempts to solve the mystery of his friend Harry Lime's death, and is soon sucked into a story similar to the harrowing tales he writes.

Trivia:

The recurring characters Charters and Caldicott, who made their film debut in The Lady Vanishes and appeared in multiple other films and radio shows, were originally meant to appear in this film as well, but in the end they were combined into the character of Mr. Crabbin.
