What the hell happened to the Farrelly Bros.?

Remember in the 90's when the Farrelly Bros. directed Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and There's Something About Mary?  Talk about a hell of a way to start a directorial career.  Three great comedies in a row and then everything turned to shit.  To be fair I liked Me, Myself, and Irene but it was not as good as their first three films.  They have yet to make anything as good as their first three films.     I would go so far as to say their remake of The Heartbreak Kid is one of the worst comedies I had the misfortune of watching.

Now the trailers for The Three Stooges have started to appear on TV and it is just sad.  I could be wrong and The Three Stooges could be awesome.  Though I doubt a movie that was originally going to star Jim Carrey, Benicio Del Torro, and Sean Penn that gets downgraded to Will Sasso, Sean Hayes, and Chris Diamantopoulos  is going to be a quality film.

So I ask does anyone know what the hell happened to the Farrelly Bros.?

Completely agree with you. Being a huge fan of The Three Stooges that trailer I saw actually made me throw up a little. I dont know if it looks horrible or if that kind of comedy doesn't work anymore.

They set out to make a 1930's slapstick comedy and apparently succeeded going by some of the fan reaction. It's not for me or you, it's for old people.

I don't know what the problem is with the Three Stooges movie, other than the Jersey Shore angle. It looks exactly like a slapstick physical humor showcase which is what the Stooges should be about.

I'll admit I didn't want to watch Heart Break Kid either since it looked down right terrible. Three Stooges, I'd be ok with if not for the whole Jersey Shore thing. I'm totally cool with Slap-Stick comedy but I fear that 3 Stooges will be nothing but one pop culture reference after another.

Most comedic acts loose their touch after a while. Think about Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Steve Martin, Ben Stiller. I think it's the same for writers and directors. Maybe they simply get tired of the comedy they've been associated with... I know I would, comedy needs to be fresh and surprising.

@Christoffer: But to peak after your first three films is kind of sad.  Robin WIlliams was never funny but is a hell of an actor and is still in awesome movies like the recent World's Greatest Dad.

When looking at their IMDB page I had no idea that  Farrelly Bros. had written Outside Providence which was a movie I loved in high school.  Don't be scared by the 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it was a fun little dramedy.  It also showed that the Farrelly Bros. could of done some great stuff instead of Stuck on You or Shallow Hal.

I don't understand the question. The Farley Brother have always made lowest common denominator slapstick/gross out comedies which is exactly what the 3 Stooges looks like it will be. So my answer is nothing, nothing has happened to them. Maybe you aren't considering the other variable, what has happened to you? How have your tastes changed and evolved over time. If Dumb and Dumber came out today, with no nostalgia and current comedians, would you be interested in it?

@Tangeu
Slapstick and Gross-out comedies much like every other genre of film can be done well.  If they were all the same then Uwe Boll's Postal would be just as good as Animal House or for a more recent example Bridesmaids.

I would think if Dumb and Dumber would of been released now that I would enjoy it more as would the critics.  I could see art house theaters double billing the film with Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie.  I don't know when the last time you watched Dumb and Dumber but it is kind of insane and falls in line with the "anti-comedy" comedy stuff I love now.

I didn't mean to imply that slapstick or gross out can't be done well, just that their style hasn't changed as much as you implied it has. I'm curious what exactly is so different between There's Something About Mary and the upcoming Three Stooges they both rely heavily on physical humor, humiliating situations, and pop culture references. Of course we only have the preview of Three Stooges to work with so maybe look at Shallow Hal which also follows that formula very closely.

And I honestly haven't seen Dumb and Dumber recently, it was once one of my favorite comedies but it also falls into that grey area of my changing tastes and I don't want to ruin fond memories ^_^ maybe I'll check it out again sometime soon.

The problem is that they burn out their comedic chops. Look at Williams in World's Greatest Dad, Murphy in Dreamgirls, Sandler in Punch Drunk Love, Stiller in Greenberg and Martin in Shopgirl. There's talent in there, they just decide to waste it on the lowest common denominator comedies because that's what gets them the cash.
