Bella Swan has just turned 18 and awakes from a strange dream in which she grows old, yet her boyfriend Edward Cullen stays the same age, due to his immortality. The Cullen family throw Bella an impromptu birthday party, in which Bella accidently cuts herself on a piece of wrapping paper, drawing blood. The overwhelming smell of the blood spurs Jasper Hale to act on his instincts and attack Bella. Fearing for Bella's life, Edward and the Cullens hold down Jasper and take Bella to safety.

The following day, due to overwhelming guilt over the incident, Edward breaks up with Bella and tells her that he and his family will move away from Forks, permanently, to protect her and the rest of the humans in town. Bella is left devastated, heartbroken and alone, which causes her to grow distant from her friends and her father, Charlie. Charlie considers sending Bella to live with her mother, which spurs Bella to reinitiate contact with her friends. After an awkward outing with friend Jessica Stanley, Bella finds that Edward can appear to her if she seeks out risky, thrill-seeking activities. She begins to spend more time with her childhood companion Jacob Black, a cheerful, loyal friend who holds special feelings for Bella herself. Although Bella and Jacob seem to grow in love with each other, Bella finds it hard to give up on Edward, which frustrates Jacob.

Jacob starts to act erratically and ignores Bella, telling her that she and him cannot congregate further. When Victoria, the vengeful vampire from the last film, begins to track and hunt Bella, Bella learns that Jacob himself, along with many from his Native American tribe, are wolves, who will strive to protect Bella from any and all attacks by vampires. Bella, alone and confused, jumps off a cliff into the ocean. This is misunderstood by Edward as a suicide attempt, and his pleas for her safety go unheard. Although Bella is alive and well, Edward fears that the love of his life has killed himself. With nothing else to live for, Edward travels to Italy to provoke the Volturi, the powerful coven of vampires who have the ability to kill Edward. When Alice, Edward's brother, learns of this plan, she travels back to Forks in order to get Bella to help her save Edward. Bella and Alice arrive just in time to save Edward from exposing his true nature to the humans and provoking the Volturi to kill him. Alice, Bella and Edward are taken to meet with the Volturi, who decide that Bella knows far too much about their lifestyle, which means that she must either be killed or become a vampire herself. The Cullens and Bella return to Forks, as Edward apologizes to Bella for leaving her. The Cullens put Bella's fate to a vote, in which the family agrees that she shall be transformed into a vampire. Jacob meets up with Bella and Edward and warns Edward of the long-standing grudge between his tribe and the Cullens- if any Cullen were to bite a human, then their peace treaty would be called off and his tribe will have the grounds to attack the Cullens. Jacob leaves distraught at Bella's decision to stay with Edward for the time being. The film ends with Edward saying that he will indeed turn Bella into a vampire...if she marries him first.
