What just happened?

SPOILERS BELOW:

Tonight on the Walking Dead season 2 finale, I came to the realization that the whole series truly was inspired by a comic book. When Katana Wielding, zombie owning, samurai person showed up and saved annoying blond lady, I thought it was pretty stupid. Up to this point the walking dead has been a realistic example of post apocalyptic zombie survival, but that was just absurd.

Anyone else really not like that element of an otherwise cool finale?

No, I thought it was cool. It's just like the character in the comic book.

the majority of the people who watch it aren't even aware that there is a comic book it's based on, I don't think it fit with what has happened in the rest of the show.

I like Michonne in the comic series, but it's not nearly enough of an incentive to draw me back to The Walking Dead.

Well, maybe then you should give season 3 a chance? It was one clip.

As someone who hasn't read the comics, that scene looked really silly. But whatever, I'm still really excited for season 3.

I read enough of the comic to know who Michonne is, but even in the comic her character was out of place for awhile especially her introduction. So really her introduction fits perfectly with the comics as in they both were super crazy when they happened and didn't quite fit with the tone up until that point.

I would have to disagree with that statement. I think a majority of people are watching it because of the comic. I think a good remaining portion are horror fans and the rest are either casual TV viewers or people who like good dramas. That being said, Michonne is the most "comic bookie" of all the characters in the series. She is somewhat ridiculous but also bad-ass. I am thrilled they brought her on board and look forward to what they'll do with her. Her introduction to the comic was a similar fashion and I'm really looking forward to season 3 as a whole.

EDIT: You really should put a spoiler warning as not everyone has seen the finale yet.

@Mikemcn: Agreed, they spend two seasons portraying this in a realistic, zombie-soap opera sorta way then bust out what seems to me to be a little girl with a katana. It just seems stupid and out of place. My most immediate issue though was the idiotic reasoning for that massive zombie horde. They just HAPPEN to all be following a helicopter and just HAPPEN to be within sight when that gun went off. Way to drum up some fake finale drama guys. I've already been annoyed at this show for the entire second half of this season since almost nothing of any lasting consequence has happened until these last two episodes. Most of the character drama seems shallow too. /grump

As I said in the Giant Bomb thread, I don't think this show is that good or even benefits from having a realistic consistency that I'm willing to welcome katana girl with open arms on this show. Heck, even on good shows I enjoy when they go over the top every once in a while just to make you go "WHAT!?", like the awesome ending to season 4 of Breaking Bad.

@Mikemcn: I'm really intrigued as to how Michonne is able to tame zombies and why. I might even start reading the comics now.

Post by rem25 (626 posts) See mini bio

@michaelfossbakk: If you want to know how she did that, click on my spoiler link:

She cut off their arms and jaws so they couldn't harm her and put them on chains to prevent other walkers from attacking her.

@Centimani: If you've read the comics or heard Kirkman talk about the zombies at all, they are attracted by noises so they saw the helicopter and just started walking in the general direction. As they walked, more walkers joined them and yeah, eventually it became a massive heard. That's really the only way this happens in the comics.

@Mikemcn: Were you expecting a Rambo type character with a heavy arsenal? She may seem over the top but you don't know her story, unlike us who have read the comics. Up to this point we have seen no one survive on their own, they all stay in groups, so I think this will be very interesting (especially for Andrea's development as a character)

I read the comics for a while, past her introduction, and yeah, she's a bit over-the-top. But so many people act ridiculous and say so many ridiculous things in the show, and after the finale, where Daryl is riding around on a motorcycle head-shotting zombies with one hand, I welcome more ridiculousness.

At least it'll reduce time spent on the more annoying characters.

I found Lori's reaction to the realization that Rick killed Shane ludicrous. Same with everyone's realization that "Rick isn't really helping us" despite all living mostly thanks to his decisions. No wonder Rick is losing his shit.

I am excited to see episodes in a prison rather than a farm.

Overall this series is crazy and melodramatic but yet I can't imagine giving it up.

People need to stop hating on Michonne. I for one thought this was the best episode of the whole second season.

Post by rem25 (626 posts) See mini bio

@FinalDasa: I think her reaction was less that Rick killed Shane but more that Rick knew Shane was going to kill him but went along with it anyways. Rick could've put a stop to it much earlier but he wanted to kill his friend. Scratch that, I'm not sure he wanted to kill his best friend but if he didn't, we not only would have to deal with Shane becoming more of a dick and trying to split the group further. I think Rick losing his shit at the end was just a culmination of what had happened. He killed his friend, his son killed said zombified friend, he got back to the farm and tried to save as many people as he could before getting out. I was a bit shocked he wouldn't go looking for Andrea but on the other hand I think he didn't want to repeat his mistake with Sophia. I missed last week's episode so watched these back-to-back and I thought the end scene with Rick and Shane before Shane is killed was one of the better dramatic parts of this season.

I thought it was hilarious that Herschel was able to shoot about 15 - 20 rounds of shotgun shells before he "ran out" and never had to reload either. I want that kind of shotgun...

Anyone else notice Glenn was using Shane's customized shotgun while Maggie was driving? I have to wonder if there was some kind of symbolism there of things to come with Glenn's character.

I really thought these last few episodes were very strong and season 3 should be an excellent one.

I thought this was a good episode. However, everyone hating on Rick was a bit unfair and didn't make much sense.

@rem25: I get the attraction to noises thing, the science of it isn't what irks me. It's that, with a whole continent worth of land to occupy, that horde was in the woods right next the shane and ricks fight right when the gun went off. They just happen to all pick that direction, and happen to be right there, not one mile back or one mile forward, RIGHT THERE. And if that horde is actually flocking somewhere, couldn't the group find a temp base and go back to the goddamn farm in a few days or a week or something? All they lost property wise was the barn they weren't even using.

@chstupid: I agree, because it's one of the only episodes where anything worthwhile happened.
