The film begins to tell the story of Odin and his struggle to maintain peace in the nine realms. Odin fought many wars against the Frost giants. The Giants began their crusade of destruction and conquest by Midgard (Earth), more precisely during the era of the Viking in Norway in 965 A.D. Odin and his troops from Asgard defeat the Frost Giants in Jotunheim and Odin takes the Casket of Ancient Winters (aka Casket - object that contains the intense cold of the Frost Gigants's World). After this event, Odin takes his two sons (Thor and Loki) to a room where there are many objects of war (the weapons room, where are powerful relics and instruments of war) among the Casket of Ancient Winters. Then, Odin asks Thor what his position on the war with the Frost Giants, Thor replied that he would destroy all monsters, but Odin says that the attitude of a king is not going to war, but a king must be always with a lot of attention when the enemy intends to start a war.
Odin also states that only one of the two children (Thor or Loki) will be king of Asgard, both were born to be kings. Several centuries have passed, and in this current moment Thor gets the coronation ceremony that will make him king of Asgard. Thor triumphantly enters the throne room. There are Lady Sif, Warriors Three, his mother - the queen and a huge crowd ready to greet the god of thunder. Loki is also there with his jealous glance. However Odin starts the coronation ceremony. Odin asks Thor if he vows to protect the lives of innocent and he vows to protect the nine realms. Odin also asks if Thor does not have envy or lust in his heart. Thor with his triumphant and confidently look replied that he agrees to protect such tasks.
But when Odin tries to end the ceremony and he would hand the title of King to Thor, behold, three Frost Giants invade the room of relics - where's Casket of Ancient Winters (in the process, they kill two Asgard guards). Mysteriously, when the Frost Giants try to escape with the artifact, the Destroyer appears and he annihilates the three attackers.
Thor, Odin and Loki from enter to see what happened. Of course Thor was enraged by this act and he demands Odin, the retaliation against the Frost Giants. Odin says that the ice giants that try to steal the Casket of Ancient Winters have been killed and more blood is no needed (for those who attempt to steal the object they already paid with their lives and this is not necessary to engage in a war because Three rebels made this act).
Thor protested, but Odin says he is not king to decide such an act, Odin prohibited Thor to go to Jotunheim (homeland of the Frost giants) in search of revenge. Odin decided to postpone the coronation ceremony of Thor. Thor gets extremely angry and he sends down a table full of food for release his hatred.
Frustrated, Thor convinces to Loki that Odin did not make the right decision and that he should go to Jotunheim to show that Asgard is not a weak kingdom and thus did not weaken in relation to other realms. Loki tells if they They go to Jotunheim is not a good idea, but Loki says that Thor is right.
Thor decides to go there in search of revenge. In this journey Loki, Lady Sif , the Warriors Three go with Thor. Thor and the others go to the observatory where Heimdall is in the Bifrost Bridge (rainbow bridge).
Heimdall not let anyone pass. Loki tries to persuade him but with no results (it seems than Loki has the reputation of a liar and trickster). Thor speaks and Heimdall agree to open the passage to Jotunheim, but Heimdall says that if they bring back an invasion, Heimdall will not open the portal back to Asgard).
Heimdall also said if the Bifrost stay open long, the bridge will grow too and it will destroy the planet and all beings that are on this same planet.
Thor agrees and Heimdall opens the way to Jotunheim. Jotunheim is a wasteland of ruins. Thor and his companions go to the place where Laufey (the leader of the frost giants). Thor asks Laufey why Frost Giants appeared in Asgard. Laufey responds that the house of Odin is full of traitors. Thor is angry and accused Laufey of despise the name of Odin. Meanwhile an army of Frost Giant is surrounding around the zone. Laufey says that Thor is just a boy and he just wants to prove he's a man. Laufey demands the Asgardians to withdraw from Jotunheim. Loki pleases generous opportunity from leave the spot. But one of the Frost Giants begins to play with Thor. Thor riposte and he attacks the giant of ice. The Asgardians give a good fight, but Fandral (Joshua Dallas) is injured in comfort. One of the giants of ice picks on the arm of Loki, but Loki kills the monster with no problem (but contact with the cold, Loki discovers he has an appearance of Frost Giant).
Surrounded and outnumbered, Loki, Sif and the Warriors Three will try to flee the scene, but Thor continues to battle. Thor uses Mjolnir to call a powerful lightning and destroyed the entire place. Laufey see that the Asgardians are escaping, he summons a giant ice monster to hunt the Asgardians. Thor goes to the aid of his friends and he kills the giant monster through the mouth with Mjolnir.
Thor asks Heimdall to open the bridge, but the area is quickly surrounded by a large number of Frost Giants. However, the Bifrost Bridge opens and Odin appears to save Thor and others. Thor, asks him to join the fight and together they will defeat the Frost Giants, but Odin asks Thor to shut up. Laufey appears and confronts Odin. Laufey says Odin looks tired and Thor started the war in Jotunheim on his own, but Odin says Laufey to forget this act because it is an act of a boy. Laufey says the situation of the negotiations is over and that the military offensive is needed. Laufey attacks Odin, but Odin counterattack and Laufey is projected away from the impact. Odin and Thor walks away with the other warriors, by Bifrost Bridge. Upon arrival in Asgard, Lady Sif, Volstagg and Hogun take Fandral to receive medical care. However, Odin, Loki and Thor are at the observatory of Heimdall. Thor replied that Odin should not have broken and physical strength was required. Odin replies that he's not ready to be King of Asgard, the only thought of Thor is resolve conflicts through the use of physical force.
Thor says that Odin is an old and crazy man and that the Nine Realms laugh at weakness of Asgard. Odin says that Thor is just an arrogant boy and he is not worthy of his title or his position in Asgard.
So to learn to be worthy, Odin takes away the divine powers of Thor and the mighty hammer Mjolnir . Odin banishes his son to Midgard (Earth). Odin also puts a spell on Mjolnir (If someone is worthy of lifting the hammer of power, this person gets the powers and capabilities of Thor). Odin launches Mjolnir to earth and the hammer falls at a place not far from the fall of Thor. Thor falls in New Mexico. At that precise moment, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) are in a caravan to observe a strange aurora. Jane suspects that the phenomenon is paranormal. Erik says it's just a sunrise, and that Jane is very dreamy and she is not objective as science requires.
Suddenly a giant cyclone appears. Jane, Darcy and Erik go to the place to see what it is. On reaching the place, accidentally the car hits on Thor (the last one is left unconscious on the floor). Jane is out of the vehicle and she will see if that man is alive or dead. He wakes up and he starts talking and he is the son of Odin and what realm is this, Darcy gets scared and she attacks Thor with an electric device (as a consequence that Thor is unconscious on the floor ). At the hospital, Thor tries to escape, but he gets a medical treatment for sleep and stay calm (in the process, he destroyed many things in the hospital). Meanwhile in Asgard, the Warriors Three and Lady Sif are surprised with the departure of Thor to Midgard. Sif asks Loki to go talk to Odin to Thor could return to Asgard. Loki says he had no advantages to the return of Thor and Thor just wants war and now with the war against Jotunheim, Thor would create even more problems.
Loki comes out of that room (and he goes to the armory room). But Sif says that although Loki speak for the sake of Asgard, Loki has always been jealous of Thor and the position of his brother to the throne of Asgard.
Loki comes to the relics room and Loki takes the Casket of Ancient Winters containing cold of Jotunheim he begins to transform himself into a Frost Giant. Odin mysteriously arrives and he asks what Loki is doing. Loki starts screaming and he demands to know who he really is. Odin says that when he invaded into Jotunheim to put an end to the invasion of the frost giants to Midgard, he found a baby. This baby was the son of Laufey and Odin took the baby and the Casket back to Asgard. Loki asks Odin why he did this thing. Odin says that the baby was abandoned alone and Loki would die. Loki is furious and he says this is the reason why Odin did not keep the throne of Asgard for Loki and Odin has always favored Thor against Loki, because he is the son of a Frost Gigant. Odin says that he was hopeful that Loki would serve to forge an alliance definitive and permanent with Jotunheim.
Loki begins to acknowledge Odin for the preference Thor. Odin has a heart attack and he falls to the ground. However, the guards of Asgard take the body of Odin for him to receive the Odin-Sleep. On Earth, the hammer Mjolnir is discovered. Several people try to raise the mighty hammer, but nobody can take it. SHIELD agents arrive at the scene and they isolate the area for testing (SHIELD also was examining the strange auroras, besides Jane Foster and her group).

Volstagg asks if Loki may reconsider such an act, but Loki is angry with the presence of Lady Sif and Three Warriros he tells them to leave the throne room (Loki is preparing for war against Jotunheim). On Midgard, during breakfast at the cafe, Thor hears the news that a strange object was found in New Mexico at 70 km from the place where Thor is at this moment. Thor asks if he can come back, but Loki says that the queen of Asgard and mother of Thor prohibits the return of Thor. Thor is emotionally crawler and he is very saddened by the death of Odin.Loki leaves, but before leaving Loki tries to lift Mjolnir (unsuccessfully Loki can not lift the hammer).

In Midgard, Erik Selvig can withdraw Thor from the facilities of SHIELD (in the process Thor could take back one book with valuable information for Jane Foster). Erik Selving however does not believe the story of Thor and he leads him into a bar (Erik plans to convince Thor to leave the city, since Jane is attracted by Thor). Then Loki uses the Casket to freeze the mechanism for the process does not stop. Thor flies up to the observatory and Thor wants to know why Loki's personality has changed so much in so little time. Loki says that he never wanted the place of Thor, but the stupid decisions of his brother led him to carry out this plan (Loki also wanted to prove to Odin,he is also worthy). Thor is angry with the attitudes of Loki and he uses Mjolnir to destroy the Bifrost Bridge (in the process, Thor stops the attack on the planet of the Frost Giants).
