Movie Fail or Win? Thor

Aside from Iron Man 2, it would seem that movie studios have eased up quite significantly on their comic book movie titles in 2010, and aside from “Inception” the year has suffered for it in terms of the quality of its “blockbusters”. That looks to be remedied in the next couple of years with the impending releases of “Thor”, “Captain America”, “The Green Lantern” and “The Avengers”. Perhaps the break was a good thing to help people catch their breath.

As an avid comic book super hero fan, I am looking forward to these movies with great anticipation, however, lets face it, these titles are B-grade heroes at best. Sure, Iron Man has shown that if a film is well made it doesn’t matter what the status of the hero was in his comic book form, but I do wonder about the broad appeal of these upcoming titles.

So it was a pleasant surprise for me to see the extended Comic-Con trailer for “Thor” which is due out early next year. This particular property seemed challenging to make in any kind of grounded form – remembering that in conjunction with “The Avengers”, it is supposed to be set in the same world/universe as the “Iron Man” films which are somewhat grounded. This trailer made me feel better about the potential of this movie, but didn’t leave me all that convinced that it would have mass market appeal. What do you think?

From the trailer the movie didn't look the least bit interesting. I just want to see its connections to Captain America and Avengers...

The comic-con trailer actually made me feel a little better about the movie.  I still have reservations mainly because Thor has never been a character I liked.

Before I saw that trailer, I had already passed on even seeing Thor, but it completely changed my tune.  If they explore that whole ancient magic=modern science(sort-of) angle, it could surprisingly make a nice fit into Tony Stark and Bruce Banner's established film world.  And Branagh is especially qualified to make the whole family drama aspect of the Gods actually interesting.

Really though, I think the superhero trend completely hinges on the new Spider-man flick. These other Marvel movies feel to me just like them taking a giant poop, like they've known they had mexican for lunch and chinese for dinner, and now they're just desperate to get them out there.

Re-booting Spider-man on the other hand, seems painful.  Like trying to date again after you just got outta a long relationship that started with movie/sex marathons and ended with open wounds and a restraining order.  If you can come back from that, then we may have some good years of Hero flicks left.

If not, DC better fucking have some more ideas than Dark Knight 4,5,6,7... cause, GL 'aint gonna do it by himself.

Considering I'll watch it pretty much the day it comes out, I'm really hoping it'll be a win.

Saw this on Monday and really enjoyed it.  Not a huge fan of the comics but the film was thoroughly entertaining and had excellent pacing (if I wasn't mistaken it came in at about 1hr50mins).

Didn't like the pointless Hawkeye cameo though which looked like it was inserted to give the fanboys something to get wet over.

I was one of the first people to see this in New Zealand, and it rocked! It was awesome, I know a bit about Thor through Comics and what not. But this is a pretty solid movie! If you do end up seeing it. Wait till the credits roll and check out the little clip at the end.

Finally saw it, and I can definitely say it was a win. Kind of surprised they were able to take such an esoteric concept - the blend of high fantasy, mythology/superhero comic book and make it into a mainstream film that doesn't get too bogged down in the confusing back story and details. Ironically quite down to earth in terms of its central themes that are quite easily relate-able for the audience.
