And now, a little something for the ladies.
And now, a little something for the ladies.

Thor did pretty well for Marvel, racking up around $440 million at the global box office. That's not as much as Iron Man or Iron Man 2 did, but it's still a hefty chunk of change, and should wind up being pretty damn profitable for them in the long run. It's no surprise, then, that Thor 2 is on the docket for production; such has been rumored for a while, but it looks like it just got a bit more official, with Deadline announcing that the film has been slotted to run in a summer 2013 timeframe. With Iron Man 3 in the bread-and-butter first weekend of May for them, I'd bet on Thor 2 opening sometime in mid-July, like Captain America is this year.

Chris Hemsworth is set to return as Thor, obviously, but what's surprising is that Marvel is announcing that Kenneth Branagh won't be coming back to direct the sequel; Deadline says the separation is "mutual and amicable," which could mean anything from Branagh not being interested or Marvel wanting some fresh blood. It'll be curious to see who they bring in for the sequel, as well as what other cast members return. Loki seems to be in Marvel's long-term plans, but I have doubts that Anthony Hopkins or Natalie Portman will be back; sequels just don't seem like they'd be much up their alley.

Of course, a lot of those questions will probably be revealed in the run-up to The Avengers next year. They'll have to pick a director before it's released, so we'll know sometime before next summer what the lineup will be. Excited? Any ideas on what they could improve from Thor?

Pity no Branagh, but I am honestly not surprised.

As long as the film is fun and good I'm fine. There's no way it could live up to the first for me, but keep Hemsworth, Hiddleston, and at least part of the the supporting cast (pref. Sif & the Warriors Three) and I'd be pretty pleased.

I loved just about everything about Thor. I want more of the same. Kinda bummed to see Branagh walk.

Thor was good, but could have benefited from a different director.

Portman said she only did the film because of Branagh, so I suspect she won't return. Although if she did that'd be awesome, she was pretty much the only reason I saw the movie but I ended up liking it anyway. I suspect Thor 2 will have less tilted camera shots.

Although the beginning of Thor 2 would be weird without Portman considering how Thor ended...

Seems like you're forgetting about Hopkins being in Hannibal and Red Dragon. And the Star Wars movies for Portman, though those might be a reason for her to be gun shy about sequels now...

Hopefully it will be better than the first Thor movie. Am I the only person that found it uneven, dry, and at times almost Twilightish?

Seriously, if the check clears Hopkins will do it.  British actors will tend to do anything if the money is right.

@JimmyJackJones: To be fair, Hopkins probably wouldnt want anyone else to playing Lecter. As for Portman, Im sure the principal casts contracts ran all 3 movies. I get the feeling McGregor would've gotten the hell out of Dodge after the first one if they werent stuck.

If Branagh is going I hope he does another series of Wallander, I kinda miss that show.

I really hope Portman gets out. She did her film "Black Swan", the role she was born to play. Unfortunately its the only type of character she can portray so just get out of the movies i want to be watching! Disclaimer: i loved V for Vendetta but really the only thing she accepted which was cool was going bald, her performance was just the usual look she delivers.

@Artie: There's no reason why they can't swap her out with another actress. Christopher Nolan did that in Dark Knight and it worked out nicely.

Although I'd like to see Natalie Portman come back. I'm in love with that girl. One day she'll realize that she's in love with me, too.

@Rorie: There is a Thor 2 page on the site you could have linked to for this story. FYI

I really enjoyed Thor and i didnt think i would. Im not big on Vikings and the whole idea of him in marvel comics just seemed crazy to me. Im excited to see what they have in store because it was the one movie this year i thought id hate but actually enjoyed a hell of a lot. I reckon Hopkins will be back, its a big movie, guaranteed pay cheque and his grand kids get to see him zapping things with his fingers.

A predictable move, but Kenneth's absence is still a shame. Let's hope he moves onto something more deserving of his talent.

.....,.you motherfuckers.....only one way to settle this.

Also I'm willing to bet Thor 2 becomes the new way that they do these Marvel movies, it'll mostly be about Thor but there's going to be heavy crossovers.

I wouldn't be too bummed if Natalie Portman didn't do another Thor movie, Hemsworth actually turned out alright. Also Hopkins for sure would do a Thor sequel. Why wouldn't he? Unless a really interesting project comes out at the same time he'll just let the money come in and put that eye patch on.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Iron Man 3 is gonna suck? Like Robert Downey Jr. is still going to be the perfect Tony Stark and everything, but the movie is just going to turn out messy.
