Throne of Blood (1957)

Edit this Page
Akira Kurosawa Director previously directed The Lower Depths

Originally released in 1957 (Japan), Throne of Blood (Kumonosu-jō) is Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece adaptation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth. The film, considered by many to be one of the best film adaptations of Macbeth, was nominated for a Golden Lion award at the 1957 Biennale Venice Film Festival.

Trivia:

The look of fear on Toshiro Mifune's face at the conclusion of the film is legitimate - the arrows being fired at him were real arrows, aimed for wooden blocks underneath his samurai armor. To the credit of the archers, no arrows missed the blocks.
