Head of the DiMeo crime family in New Jersey. Also a father and husband.

Tony Soprano is the son of Johnny and Livia Soprano and was born and raised in the Italian-American neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey.  Tony was the middle child and had two sisters, Janice and Barbara.  At a young age, Tony witnessed his father and Uncle, Corrado "Junior" Soprano, assaulting a man in the neighborhood.  This incident, along with observing his father get arrested led him to the realization that his father was involved in organized crime.  Tony's childhood friends included his cousin, Tony Blundetto, and Artie Bucco, with whom he played little league.  In high school, Tony participated in football and baseball and met Carmela DeAngelis, who he would eventually marry.  After high school, Tony attended Seton Hall for a semester and a half before dropping out to pursue a life in organized crime.

Tony's rise through the ranks of the family began when he, Silvio Dante, and Jackie Aprile robbed a high-stakes card game operated by Michele La Manna.  Although they were later caught, the bold act earned them the respect of the older men in the organization thanks, in part, to some convincing from Richie Aprile.  When Johnny died, Tony took over as captain of his crew, inheriting Silvio Dante, Paulie Gualtieri, and Salvatore Bonpenseiro.  Tony continued to be a good earner and gained the respect of all the other captains in the organization.  When the acting boss of the family, Jackie Aprile, Sr., passed away from cancer, many of the captains felt that Tony should step into the role.  Tony, however, recommended that his Uncle Junior be named as boss of the family, in part to help resolve growing tensions between he and his uncle and, in part, to give a specific target for the feds' investigation.  Despite Junior's promotion, it was always understood that Tony would actually run things behind the scene  Ultimately, Junior was arrested under federal indictment, Tony stepped into the role as head of the family.  Under Tony. the business continued to thrive despite his personal issues and several confrontations with the New York family.

Tony is married to Carmela Soprano and has two children, Anthony Jr. and Meadow.  The couple went through a trial separation for a period and actually discussed divorce proceedings, but they were able to make up the differences and reconcile.  Tony has stated that everything he does, he does for his children.  He originally attempted to hide has true profession from them, but was forced to reveal how he makes his money as they became older.  Tony also has regular visits with his therapist, Dr. Jennifer Melfi.  He began therapy upon the advice of his family doctor when he began having panic attacks and the cause could not be diagnosed.
