Miracle Day is so bad, you shouldn't watch it just to see how bad

I know some people may be interested in watching Torchwood for its ties to Doctor Who. That's fair. In fact, you may enjoy it's first two seasons for its monster of the week structure, or its third mini-season as it's legitimately good.

However, stay far FAR away from Miracle Day. The entire plot of the season is based on the mother of all plot holes that insults the intelligence of the viewer. Not to mention the writing, especially in the final episode, is god awful. For those that have suffered with me these past ten weeks, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

EDIT

Here's what happened for those that don't care/don't believe just how bad it was...

Long story short, back in the first season of the new Who Captain Jack died. Then a time vortex thing flowed directly through him. He's not immortal due to changed DNA or any other special physiological trait. It's more like he must always exist as he did that day. He gets shot? Nope, he wasn't shot that day, back to normal. Hand chopped off? Nope, he had both hands that day, back to normal. Other than timey wimey nonsense, he's a normal human.

Now to Miracle Day.

Everyone knows the premise. People can no longer die, but Captain Jack can. After the first episode, the next SEVEN EPISODES are spent figuring out the Miracle is called the Blessing by the people who intentionally started it.

In the final episodes you find out there's this giant Earth vagina of nothingness going through the entire earth from Shanghai to Buenos Aries. Somehow Earth's vagina has created this "mophic field" that ties all of humanity together. Specifically, the average life span of a human.

Previously there was an entire flashback episode of Jack going to New York before WWII and having gay sex. Somehow he gets locked up in a cellar and people come to watch him die over and over. Some people collect his blood for some reason. However, it is stressed repeatedly over three or four episodes that there is literally NOTHING special about Jack's blood.

Back to Earth's vagina, these people made everyone "immortal" by dumping Jack's old collected blood into the vagina from both sides at the same time. Good guys reset things by Jack dumping his somehow now mortal blood into one side, and his friend transfused with Jack's blood dumping that into the other side. Yay, good guys win.

Also, the bad guys spent the whole season trying to kill Jack because they knew he was the only person who could reverse the Miracle. So instead of killing him dead on the spot when he was looking at the Earth vagina surrounded by guards, OR letting him commit suicide by dumping his blood into only one side of the vagina, the bad guys spend five minutes explaining how to defeat them.

Now to a funeral for a friend, previously mentioned friend transfused with Jack's blood gets assassinated by a CIA mole. EVERYONE CAN DIE NOW! OH NO! Oh, wait, turns out Jack's blood made him immortal too.

The entire story for Miracle Day is literally based on a plot hole.

I'm only 3 episodes in, but it seems the usual watchable light entertainment that I've come to expect from torchwood. You have me worried sir, worried indeed.

@TheThirdMan: If you're not a big Doctor Who/Torchwood fan, you may enjoy it more. Without giving anything away, the entire back story for Captain Jack has been changed in order for the plot of this season to exist.

Over the course of the next five episodes you're going to wonder why so little has happened. And if you're already familiar with the character of Harkness, you're going wonder why this season even exists after the last two episodes.

I didn't know there could be a TV show worse than Dr. Who, but then I caught an episode of Torchwood, and Christ, there is no stronger argument for the abolishment of the license fee than this.

@HandsomeDead: If you saw an Ecclestone or Tennant episode, I could see why you'd say that. It was probably written by Russell T Davies, who is a total fucking moron, and also the show runner of Torchwood (hence the shittiness).

But if you're saying that about the Moffat/Smith era, you can go take a long walk off a short pier.

I agree its god awful which is a shame because season 3 was so good and did really well for the bbc, havent seen the final episode yet doesn't air until thursday i think here

@Falcon: I'm saying that about all of Dr. Who but the new stuff specifically. Putting a science fiction show for children on as prime time TV is embarrassing.

@HandsomeDead: And yet, not only is it one of the most popular television shows in the United Kingdom, but also the entire world. Just because you don't find it entertaining doesn't mean that others share the same opinion. Get the stick out of your ass.

He is talking about Dr. Who not Torchwood: Miracle Day there.

My room mate last year loved Dr. Who and I inevitably watched a few episodes of Dr. Who/ Torchwood and I must say I prefer Who. Although I do love anything Steven Moffat.

It actually doesn't matter what he is referencing. I just find it hilarious that in the same thread he would rip apart a show and state that everyone should hate it then later (when someone doesn't like what he does like) pull out the "just because you don't like it doesn't mean no one can" card.

@NickL: Lemme spell this out for yah bro, since you can't read.

Torchwood Seasons 1-3 = awesome

Torchwood Miracle Day = total shit. Why? Short story stretched over a long season, bad writing, completely changed backstory of a developed and beloved character.

Were there any aliens in this? I gave up after episode 3

Hell even this weeks episode of Dr. Who was much better even if it did rip-off Portal.

CSI: Miami is the most popular show on the planet; should I say that's good too because a lot of people like it? As expected, the fan of a kid's show argues like a kid.

I don't get it, why can't they just say screw kids and go a little bit edgier with Doctor Who? I mean the majority of the show's audience isn't kids so I don't see why they can't. I love Torchwood because they can do whatever they want with the show and with Doctor Who they have to play it safe. I still watch the show because lately it's been really good and I think Moffat is a better writer than Russell T. Davis ( Though I'm not saying he's a bad writer, it's just Moffat is better). I haven't been able to watch Miracle Day because they put it on the network just about nobody has. I thought right from the beginning that they were going to have trouble with stretching the plot of Miracle Day over ten episodes.

  • Every single Angel episode
  • Series 6 Austronaught/Silence 2 parter
  • Flesh 2 parter

Pretty edgy stuff if you ask me.

Doctor Who is a family show. It's a show that people can sit down on the couch and know they can enjoy it every week with everyone. Doctor who is accessible. The larger an audience a show has, the more successful it is.
