Film

In the film community, Toronto has increasingly become associated with the term "Hollywood North" as Toronto is a very popular location to film movies due to it's aesthetic similarity to New York City combined with the cost effectiveness of film productions when compared to productions in other parts of North America.

Toronto is also known for it's dedication to the film industry. Toronto ranks third in film and television production in North America and is home to Alliance Atlantis, the twelve largest distribution company in the world, as well as Nelvana, one of the largest animation/children's entertainment studios in the world. Toronto also has many government funded tax incentive programs for productions taking place in the city that help reduce production costs and is also home to thousands of film professionals including set designers, audio professionals, and other production crew workers.

Toronto is also home to Pinewood Toronto Studios, the largest film studio in Canada capable of accommodating large blockbuster movies. The studio includes over 250,000 square feet of production space with 8 stages, including the largest purpose-built soundstage in North America.

Toronto International Film Festival

Along with the cities popularity as a production location, Toronto is also home to the Toronto International Film Festival, a publicly attended festival which takes place in early September and last for 10 days.  It attracts many actors and film-makers from around the world to premiere their films and is generally considered to be the beginning of the Oscar race.

It is also considered by many to be second only to the Cannes Film Festival in terms of influence. The two major differences between the festivals being that Cannes is a private festival as well as a competitive one with the only major award handed out at TIFF being the "People's Choice Award", given to the feature-length film with the highest rating as voted by the festival-going populace.

Winners of the "People's Choice Award" include Precious, Slumdog Millionaire, Eastern Promises, Whale Rider, American Beauty, The Fisher King, Roger & Me, The Princess Bride, The Big Chill, and Chariots Of Fire.
