Christian Bale stars in what is reportedly the most expensive Chinese film yet produced, about a band of escapees during the Nanking Massacre.

Retribution for when he kidnapped one of their best bankers?
Looks interesting, but I bet this will be a limited release, though.
Well this will outrage the Japanese, that's for sure. Unlike the Germans, they've really rather struggled with confornting their warcrimes.
I probably won't end up watching this unless it gets real good reviews, not being massively keen on obvious nationalistic propaganda, be it made in Hollywood, London, Beijing or anywhere else. None the less, I'm moderately intrigued as to if this is a sign of Chinese filmmakers producing more films with the west in mind.
Well this looks amazing.
Looks good. I hope it actually hits a theater near me.
Christian Bales beard is looking pretty darn good.
children singing is like ear poison
I know almost nothing of this conflict so I've no idea how accurate etc it will be, but by god it looks pretty stunning.
So Christian Bale got this role because he was in Empire of the Sun? Weird...
I have two thoughts here; One is that, shit. Even when Chinese produce their own movie, the headlining actor is white. Bizarre, especially during the whole "Akira casting is such a shit deal for asian actors" situation going on now. Secondly....it shouldn't be this hard for Batman to protect a bunch of Chinese people, should it? :)
Seriously though, this looks very good. Even if Batman is totally holding back.
I have no interest in this unless its banned in China. Im not okay with China being the painted damsel of WW2 for the same reason I wouldn't be okay with Russia. It would seem the great war was the only thing holding those countries back from some of the biggest human rights violations in history. The Nanking story is worth telling, but few have tried because how do you end the story? Make a Holocaust movie, there's a silver lining in the ending. Nanking is simply prelude to a much more dire inhouse struggle that would make a more interesting film.
This looks interesting but more because of the prospects of Chinese cinema then anything else. I'm really just tired of the whole "war is the most horrible thing on the planet" theme that's far to prevalent in movies. I know it's true and there were atrocities committed and few countries are innocent in such dealings but there's been so much of it in movies that I'm starting to feel like their just beating us over the head with it.
This looks pretty great. I love me some Christian Bale.
Yeah like forkboy said, the Japanese don't like to remember this period of time. I even read that some Japanese politicians will completely deny that it even happened. It looks okay for a film but I wasn't expecting it to be fully in English. Bale looks like he pulling in a decent performance considering the possible language barrier on the set ( I don't know that for sure), with that said I'm expecting mixed reviews.
How this movie should have went:
Chinese Girl: What are you going to do?
Bale: FUCK THEIR SHIT UP
*cue montage of Bale getting suited up interspersed with shots of chinese kids singing*
BIG 'OL EXPLOSION, Bale whips out dual pistols from under his priest robes and shoots some dudes, then a kick-ass guitar solo plays and fade to black. You guys can just mail me the check whenever you feel like it.
Shining Through motherfuckers
Well I'm quite interested in this film. How many big-budget WWII movies/tv miniseries have been made recently that depict anything other than the US perspective of the war? Yes there is an American in it...but the story looks like it'll mostly be about what happened at Nanking and how this group of people tried to survive...which is unique as far as I know.
Say what you will about Bale, he does pick some fascinating films. Could be good.
