After the destruction of their home planet of Cybertron by the slef-righteous Decepticon leader Megatron, the Autobots -- the good-aligned faction of the machine race known as Transformers -- descend onto the planet Earth. They're in search of the All Spark, an artifact that could very well restore their civilization. One among this group of extraterrestrials, the one called Bumblebee, disguises himself as a 1976 Camaro, which high school student Sam Witwicky unwittingly purchases as his first vehicle. Meanwhile, the a squad of Decepticon infantry arrive on the planet for much the same reason as the Autobots, as well as to rescue their lost leader, Megatron, who crashed on earth centuries ago. Unlike the autobots who don't harm humans, the decepticons immediately begin to attack and engage the United States Military in combat.
Sam Witwicky is just a normal nerdy teenager with a huge crush on his classmate
Mikaela. Sam's dad agrees to pay for half his car, and they purchase a 1976 Camaro which the autobot bumblebee is disguised as. Naturally, Mikaela is dating the biggest douchebag in the school so Sam uses his new wheels to heroically offer her a ride home. On the way home the car starts to malfunction and pulls itself off the road. This leads to Mikaela bending over to examine the engine and the now famous Megan Fox photo.
One night Sam watches his car steal itself and decides to chase after it. He catches up to it and sees bumblebee in its transformed mode sending a signal to skies for the rest of the autobots to join him. Sam calls the police, but the lousy police officer believes he's just another kid on drugs. Bumblebee returns home causing Sam to flee, believing the car is stalking him, he crashes his bike and bumps into to Mikaela who decides to follow him. Meanwhile, Barricade a decepticon disguised as a cop car begins to chase after Sam as well. Mikaela catches up to Sam as he's fleeing from a transformed Barricade, they both jump inside bumblebee and flee the scene. Eventually Barricade catches up to them and Bumblebee engage in a fight. While the entire fight isn't seen, Bumblebee eventually ends up victorious, and Sam convinces Mikaela to come with him and bumblebee. During the drive Mikaela criticizes the camaro, causing bumblebee to kick them both out, while he becomes a 2008 Chevrolet Camaro.
Bumblebee takes them to meet the rest of the Autobots - Jazz, Ironhide & ratchet - and they explain why the transformers are here and why they need the glasses. Returning to Sam's home to get the glasses, chaos runs amok with his parents as Sam scrambles to hide the transformers and mikaela from his parents while he tries to find the glasses. By the time he locates them Agent Simmons from "Sector 7" shows up and takes Sam, Mikaela and his
parents with them. Along the way the Autobots intervene and temporarily free Sam and Mikaela, but not before Simmons reveals Mikaela's dark past and that her dad is in jail for grand theft auto. However, another sector seven agent calls into base on speakerphone sending entire units to capture the autobots. Sam and Mikaela hide with Optimus, but Bumblbee is captured, Sam rushes into the fray to try to save him from being frozen but is also arrested and taken with Mikaela to the hoover dam. There they are introduced to two computer hackers, the secretary of de fense, some sweet army dudes who survived an attack by the decepticons and see Megatron, frozen beneath the hoover dam. Furthermore S7 reveals they have the all spark and show how it creates the transformers using a nokia phone. Unfortunately Frenzy, disguised as Mikaela's cell phone notifies the decepticons of the all sparks location and begins to unfreeze Megatron.
With Starscream arriving to attack the base, Sam convinces Simmons to unfreeze Bumblebee who shrinks the all spark so small that a human can carry it, before Bumblebee, Mikaela, Sam & the army guys flee the dam and head into the city. Meanwhile the Autobots using the glasses are racing to find the dam, but are intercepted on the highway by Bonecrusher on the highway who attack Optimus Prime. Prime quickly dismantles him by using a Sword and chopping him up like a samurai. The SecDef and hackers using a CB radio connection contact the airforce to help out the army in the city, and also defeat Frenzy.
Eventually all the autobots and decepticons arrive at the city for one humongous battle. Bumblebee early on is injured and loses his feet, Mikaela thinking on her feet hijacks a tow-truck and tows bumblebee while he shoots. Working the army they manage to take out Brawl. Sam and Mikaela have a moment before he rushes to the top of a building to be rescued by Choppers. As megatron arrives to the battle he quickly rips Jazz in two and engages Optimus Prime in a sweet battle. Knocking Prime down, he then chases Sam to the top of the building, quickly dismantling the choppers there to rescue Sam. Sam begins to fall from the building but is rescued by Optimus Prime. The Army guys attempt an insanely unreal slide off a motorbike that coupled with F-22 fire destroys Barricade, leaving only Starscream and Megatron standing for the decepticons. Megatron knocks Optimus to the ground, but is under heavy fire from F-22's, Sam Capitalizes on the opportunity
and sends the All Spark into Megatrons chest, killing the Spark and Megatron.
The government orders the Sector 7 project be shut down and the remnants of the decepticons dumped deep in th e Ocean. The film concludes with StarScream taking off into space, Sam getting with Mikaela and Optimus sending a message into the stars, listing earth as a refuge for all Autobots, and that he has learned Humans, like Transformers are more then meets the eye.
When the United States launched its invasion of Iraq in 2003, Hasbro convinced Producer Don Murphy to set his sights on their Transformers license rather than proceeding with the G.I. Joe adaptation he had been planning. Together with Tom DeSanto, Murphy met with Simon Furman, a comic book author responsible for much of the Transformers background, and writing began on a treatment for the film. Soon after, in 2004, Steven Spielberg came on board as an executive producer, and the first draft of the script was written by John Rogers. This early concept of the film threw four Autobots and Decepticons into the ring against one another, and focused on the Ark spaceship from Cybertron.
Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman were soon brought in to rewrite the script in 2005, and followed advice from Spielberg in that the film should focus on "a boy and his car" as a theme. The rewritten draft featured only Sam and Mikaela as its human characters, and none of the robots were given dialogue as the studio felt talking robots would be too "ridiculous." It was decided, however, that the Transformers needed to speak to keep the fanbase happy. Michael Bay was approached by Spielberg as a director, and though he scoffed at the franchise as some "stupid toy movie," he accepted with thanks to his desire to work with Spielberg. Bay decided that the script was too kiddie, and had Orci and Kurtzman increase the role of the military within the film's narrative.
The cast of robots was experimented with quite a bit throughout the development cycle, and it was eventually decided that the most popular among them would be represented in the script.
