Someone clarify this bit from the film for me.

I bought the Blu-Ray and watched the movie a few more times, and there's one small thing that is bugging me.

When Sam fights Rinzler during disc wars, they show CLU picking up a pair of glowing spheres from the table, and cycling them around in his hand.  The implication seems to be that CLU is controlling Rinzler, because they cut back to the balls in his hand at least one more time while they are fighting.

However, throughout the rest of the film, Rinzler seems to act autonomously (though we obviously learn he has been reprogrammed from Tron to "become" Rinzler).  So, what was the deal with those balls?

Anyone have any ideas?

Rinzler appeared to be taking commands through the whole film. No, Clu isn't feeding him every move, he's just telling him what to do in a general sense, the way a boss tells an underling what to do. How its done is determined by Rinzler.

The thing I didn't fully understand was CLU's ultimate goal in the movie, was he planning on taking an army out into the real world and conquering it? I mean do they become human if they exit the computer world like Quorra did? Or is she special somehow because she's an ISO? I know that you shouldn't pick apart how TRON stuff works but I'm still wondering

I was kind of hoping Clu would make it out to the real world and have a dramatic death scene on account of not having lungs and organs and such. But considering Quorra just kinda dipped out, I think they're thinking that you need to view TRON through the lense of fantasy not scifi and just let whatever weird fanciful internal logic that's at work play out without overthinking it. Cus it is a movie about going into a computer where programs are people. So I mean.

@Venatio: His goal was to grow his network by taking over our world. I figure the internal logic of Tron is that if you go through the portal you can exist on the other side so he would be popping out with his huge army. The key to all this the army going through and Quorra existing in the real world is Kevin Flynns disc which he gives to her. So with the disk Clu would of known what he needed to do to go to the other side same with Quorra..

I figure the balls are just subtle suggestions for Rizzler not straight up mind control

I assumed the balls were a visual metaphor for Rinzler being an easy to control plaything.

i thought the balls were controlling  the disc arena when CLU reversed the direction he was moving them the arena's gravity reversed and sent Sam to the ceiling

Say what you want about Tron Legacy, but its use of balls is way better than Michael Bay's use of balls in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Just saying.

You have to watch the director's cut.  There is an alternate ending where Quorra has to take a sht for the first time and decides she wants to go back into the computer.

@flap_jackson: Yeah, true, but I still think mBay has it on lock in the digital racism department.

Yep, I agree, I'm pretty sure it was controlling the gravity of the disc arena.
