Twilight is a romance film based on the novel with the same name by Stephenie Meyer. It follows the story of a young Bella Swan ( Kristen Stewart), who finds her life forever changed when she falls in love with Edward Cullen ( Robert Pattinson), a high-school student who hides a dark secret about who he truly is.
The film begins with Isabella "Bella" Swan (Stewart) moving to Forks, Washington to live with her father, Charlie Swan (Burke), as her mother Renee (Clarke) has remarried and decided to travel with her new husband. Bella enrolls at Forks High School as a junior and is quickly befriended by many of the students, including Angela (Serratos), Jessica (Kendrick) and Mike (Welch).
During lunch, Bella finds herself drawn to the enigmatic Cullen family, a close-knit clan of siblings, fathered by the town doctor, Carlisle Cullen (Facinelli). Bella finds herself especially attracted to Edward Cullen (Pattinson), the tall, pale, de facto leader of the clan. After an awkward meeting during Biology class, Edward introduces himself to Bella, as they begin a friendship. One day after class, Bella is nearly struck by a runaway car, yet Edward is able to stop the car with his bare hands, which urges Bella to find out just who Edward really is. After meeting with a family friend, Jacob Black (Lautner), Bella learns of an old tribal tale that implied that the Cullen family descended from a line of vampires.
After much pestering and rapport, Bella learns the truth about the Cullens and begins to fall in love with Edward, as he returns the gesture. Edward brings Bella to meet the rest of his family- Carlisle (Facinelli), the father, Esme (Reaser), the mother, Rosalie (Reed) and Alice (Greene), the sisters and their respective "mates", Emmett (Lutz) and Jasper (Rathbone). As there relationship grows and becomes stronger Edward invites Bella to a rare scene, a vampire baseball game. But when a vengeful, vicious group of vampires- Laurent (Gathegi), James (Gigandet) and his mate Victoria (Lefevre), decide to attack and target innocents in Forks, Edward & Bella's forbidden relationship is tested. So to keep Bella safe, Edward sends her with Alice and Jasper to Arizona, but as James, one of the murderous vampires, targets Bella he makes a secret plan to get her without the other vampires noticing too soon and holds her hostage back at her hometown in Phoenix. Seconds after James bites Bella, Edward and the rest of the Cullen clan are able to successfully track James and murder him. As Bella only has seconds to live after her poisonous bite, Edward is able to suck the venom from her wrist, saving her from becoming a vampire herself.
Bella is sent to the hospital to recover, as she and Edward try their best to cover up the events that took place prior as to appease Bella's parents. After some time, Bella proceeds to go to prom with Edward, where Jacob warns Bella to stay away from Edward, alluding to the events that take place in the sequel. As she has the time of her life with her best friends and lover, Victoria, James' widow, views the scene from afar, further plotting her revenge at the family who killed the one person near and dear to her.
Twilight grossed nearly $7 million in midnight ticket sales the night before the movie's official release; a high number for a seemingly unknown property at the time. On the first day of release, Twilight grossed $35.7 million in ticket sales, finishing the weekend with an astounding $69.6 million total, handily trumping the heavily hyped Disney CGI animated comedy, Bolt with nearly three times the overall gross. It stands as the biggest opening weekend for a film directed by a woman (Catherine Hardwicke) and grossed $408 million worldwide on a $37 million budget.
Based on 193 reviews from RottenTomatoes.com, the film received an overall mixed rating- 49% or "Rotten". Most people felt the inherent camp and unintentional humor brought down the quality of the film, while others felt that it was a serviceable adaptation of the novel, with the core romance & chemistry between the two stars still being kept in tact. The DVD was released on March 21, 2009, selling 3 million copies on its first day.
Due to the success of the film, Summit Entertainment (the movie studio that produced Twilight) optioned the rights to the rest of Stephanie Meyer's novels. A sequel to Twilight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, was announced on November 22 (the day after Twilight's release) and released on November 20, 2009. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was released on June 30, 2010, and two more films based on the last novel in the Twilight series are due to be released in the upcoming future: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1 is set for release on November 18, 2011, while The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2 sees release on November 16, 2012.
