In Brooklyn
Mario and Luigi discuss a recent phone call from apparently famous baseball manager Tommy Lasagna. Mario takes Luigi's meatballs off the stove and tells his brother to stand back. He believes that Tommy Lasagna is coming over to recruit one of them for a new Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. Mario wants to practice pitching fastballs with Luigi's rock hard meatballs. Mario does a crazy windup before daintily throwing the ball and breaking some nearby glass. Luigi says that pitchers are too common. He thinks Tommy Lasagna is coming to recruit him as a power hitter. Luigi picks up a pipe and fantasizes that he has just hit a home run. He rounds the bases. In his day dream he touches all the bases but third. Mario picks up a meatball and waits for him at home plate. Mario tags out Luigi. The door bell rings, interrupting their reverie. It is Tommy Lasagna. He is stunned as there is a meatball lodged in his mouth.

In the Mushroom Kingdom
Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad travel deep under the ocean in Aqua Land. They are in a homemade submarine constructed from a bathtub and some plumbing parts. The team spots a Mermushroom being chased by an angry-looking Blooper. They pilot their submarine down to the ocean floor to stop the attack. The group steps out of their submarine with no adverse effects and challenge the Blooper. Mario and Luigi duel with the trident carrying invertebrate with plungers. The  two sides exchange blows. Luigi accidentally get in a lucky hit on the Blooper but then gets his head stuck in an underwater plant. The Blooper recovers and threatens to stab Luigi. Mario reacts quickly by picking up a discarded anchor and swinging it above his head. He tosses it successfully and it slams into the Blooper's face.

The Mermushroom comes out of hiding to thank her saviors. The swimming fungus explains that BarraKoopa is kidnapping the Mermushroom people and forcing them to be slaves. Even Neptune, Lord of the Deep, is imprisoned by BarraKoopa. The Mermushroom pleads for help. Mario says that their specialty is casually foiling King Koopa's plans.

King Koopa sits on the Throne of the Deep and mocks Neptune. Neptune responds in stride. He is very laid back and  tells King Koopa to relax. King Koopa is perplexed by this rambling. Neptune continues spouting mellow gibberish with sea metaphors substituted. King Koopa orders Neptune taken to the dungeon. King Koopa cannot stand nice kings. The anchor smashed Blooper arrives to inform King Koopa that the Mario Brothers are in Aqua Land. King Koopa is not happy. He orders an elite force of minions attack Mario at once.

The Mermushroom takes Mario and his group to witness the atrocities being committed by King Koopa. The Mermushrooms and fish are being forced at trident point to gather all of the valuables off of sunken ships in Aqua Land. Mario quickly develops a plan to rescue the Mermushrooms and whispers it to his cohorts. Luigi objects, calling the plan suicide, but he eventually relents due to a shaming by Mario.

Mario's hare-brained plan goes into effect. Mario knocks out one Blooper guard with a beam dropped from a mast (which is odd because they're underwater). Luigi lures a Blooper into a ship's hold and traps the Blooper in an inner tube. He then releases the air valve, and the Blooper spins off into the ocean. Princess Toadstool puts on a seductive female Blooper disguise and distracts three Bloopers. For some reason, the ploy works. Toad hits the distracted Bloopers with an oar. The plan succeeds somehow. Mario and his group celebrate.

King BarraKoopa arrives with his attack force. He is none too pleased with Mario and his crew. A series of Bloopers toss nets onto Mario and his group. Instead of moving out of the way of the slow moving nets, Mario and party stand perfectly still. Even though they are individual nets, they form into one big net. Koopa wants to execute Mario and his group. He tosses them onto a ship and locks the hatch.

Angry Trouters chase Mario and his posse through the corridors of the ship. Mario and his crew scramble to flee. They turn a corner and run into a collection of angry Piranha Plants. Mario and his team long jump over the plants as the Trouters catch up with them. They escape through a hatch and close it before the angry fish have a chance to take a bite out of them. They breathe a sigh of relief until a slow moving, crab-like Claw Grip scuttles towards them. Mario and his team again long jump over an obstacle and make it through another hatch. Luckily, the hatch leads to a ballast tube and to the outside of the ship. Princess Toadstool sets their next objective as rescuing Neptune. The Mermushrom with them shows them a secret passage through the dungeon.

n his prison cell, Neptune mumbles rhyming gibberish about how is trapped and ponders a way to escape and help his people. Mario pushes a large, loose block out of the wall and emerges in Neptune's cell. Neptune is stunned as the pudgy plumber prostrates himself before the sea god. The rest of Mario's team arrive and explain the  situation. The Princess says they need a large force to combat King Koopa. Neptune tells them not to worry. He can gather an army of fish using his ability to talk to sea life.

Koopa's salvage operation ends. He is displeased with scarcity of gold coins freely available in shipwrecks on the ocean floor. King Koopa's throne room shakes as Neptune rides a Blue Whale. The whale smashes into the castle repeatedly. A wall collapses in the throne room, and Mario and his crew rides in on a sea horse and carry swordfish. A group of hidden Bloopers attack Mario and Luigi. Mario vaults over the Bloopers to attack King Koopa. He and King Koopa duel over the treasure. Luigi, the Princess, and Toad easily subdue their Blooper attackers by cutting their tridents in half and kicking, punching, and head butting them in the face. Mario's duel with King Koopa ends King Koopa's trident breaks. King Koopa makes a run for it, but Mario flings his swordfish after him. The fish harasses King Koopa as he flees. Everyone laughs at the dethroned king. Neptune is reinstated king.

Back in Brooklyn
Tommy Lasagna meets with Mario and Luigi with a meatball still jammed in his mouth. The coach mumbles angrily through his meatball. Luigi asks which one made the cut and is on the team. Luigi pulls the meatball from the coach's mouth. He informs them that he would need to see their "stuff" before he could make any judgment. Mario and Luigi clear a baseball diamond and make bases out of pizza boxes. Mario pitches. Luigi bats. Mario fumbles with his glove and ball on a string. After much dancing, Mario pitches. It nearly kills  Tommy Lasagna. Tommy Lasagna measures the speed of the fastball with a radar gun. The gun reads, "Keep the Day Job." Luigi laughs. Tommy Lasagna encourages them to keep practicing while he watches exciting scenes from the next episode of The Legend of Zelda.

Somehow, Luigi tackles Tommy Lasagna while trying to reach a base. Mario and Luigi pick up the baseball coach and dust him off. Tommy Lasagna does not like either of their baseball skills. He is here to sample their meatballs. He is opening a new restaurant in Brooklyn and wants the famous Mama Mario Meatball Recipe. He takes a bite of a meatball and immediately spits it out. He does not like it as it tastes like horsehide and string. He says he will take the batch of meatballs not to eat but to cover with leather and use as baseballs. Tommy Lasagna leaves angrily. He says that Mario and Luigi could act as peanut vendors at the ballpark but would never be players. Mario and Luigi are pleased by this news. They begin practicing their vending barks.
