Uma Thurman Biography

Uma Karuna Thurman was born April 29, 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts but grew up in the small rural city of Amherst. Her father was heavily involved in Buddhism and Uma travelled to India many times as a child, meeting the Dalai Lama on regular occasions. Uma suffered from body dysmorphic disorder until her mid-20s, a condition that causes the affected to believe that something is wrong with their own bodies. Despite this she began modeling at age 15 and within four years was gracing the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Her film debut came in 1988 and she starred in four movies that year, including The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. That film earned only $8 million with a budget of $46 million, making it a financial boondoggle for Columbia Pictures and signaling the start of a trend in which Thurman would be cast in films that ended up bombs at the box office (though no fault of her own).

Thurman's break that allowed her greater access to leading roles came from her performance in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, a huge critical and box office success that launched her career onto the Hollywood A-list. In 1997 she was cast in the acclaimed sci-fi thriller Gattaca and met future husband Ethan Hawke there. The couple had two children before filing for divorce in 2004. After her first child was born in 1998 Thurman took a five year hiatus from major film projects, instead focusing on independent cinema. When she returned it was to John Woo's Paycheck, which only did moderately at the box office and with critics. She joined forces with Quentin Tarantino once again in Kill Bill as assassin Beatrix Kiddo, who Thurman co-created with Tarantino from a single concept the two had from their days working on Pulp Fiction.
