Let's start out by giving my final verdict: It's amazing. I love the movie "Walk Hard". It's exactly the kind of comedy that generally fails at the box office but enjoys a cult following on DVD years later. Walk Hard will be my comedy of choice for a long time.
What makes this movie so wonderful? Well, let me start by saying it's 90% the writing. The writing in the movie is so spot on, filled with so many memorable and hilarious quotes, that it's truly hard to forget. The movie is just enough self-aware, but still packs in plenty of story and believability that it works the whole way through. So much of the movie is the little one liners or throw away lines in between scenes that add that much more. just take a quick glance at the "quotes" section on screened for this movie and you'll see why. You can see a lot of time and thought was spent on making the dialog, and even the music, work exactly as intended.
On top of the great writing, the actors and actresses that play each part just seem made for the movie, with John C. Reilly at his best. One of the most astonishing parts is that all of the music sung in the movie is actually performed by John. He fits the title character so well and can sing like the best of them. It's one of the few comedy movies with a completely original soundtrack that is worth listening to after the credits roll. Some of the songs on the album don't make it into the movie, which is a shame because John's cover of "Starman" is really awesome.
Great writing, a funny premise, goofy characters, and a fantastic soundtrack make Walk Hard a comedy that hits all the right notes and is still funny on multiple viewings. I can't recommend this movie enough to people. Go get it, you won't be disappointed.
