They'll now be starting World War III on a phone app.
They'll now be starting World War III on a phone app.

You know, I wouldn’t figure that WarGames would have a significant influence thirty odd years out of its release, but I feel like it might be the fourth most popular choice for an elevator pitch ingredient I’ve heard over the years. “Such-and-such is WarGames meets these other movie.” That kind of thing. It's right up there with Die Hard in that respect.

If WarGames’ half-life in the popular imagination was depleting at all, it’s about to a new surge of radiation, because Deadline’s saying that MGM’s locked Seth Gordon to direct a remake fresh off of Horrible Bosses. If that seems like any kind of a thematic jump for the guy, keep in mind that he got his big break with the King of Kong, so this would actually bring him back to kind of marriage of gaming and movies that doesn’t pertain to MGS4-style 40 minute cut scenes.

Along with RoboCop, Carrie and the as-of-yet-unreleased Red Dawn, this is another quarter on the gaming cabinet dashboard que of remakes that the revived MGM’s got on its docket. The original movie really made Hackers look like hard-hitting realism when it came to depicting the wonderful world of computers, so we’ll see how much the story is jiggered with to make it more believable to today’s always-suspicious audiences.

I just don't see the point.  Now if they updated it to be a rogue trading program is about to bring down the entire financial world because it thinks its playing a game, that could be relevant.  Also not really War Games.

I feel like Jesse Eisenberg is the go to buy for the Broderick roll. The remake needs to include the cheese factor. To address the Cold War issue, I'd set it in some other country than the US. Seth Gordon, I hope you're reading this. I'm full of good ideas.

Yeah, I think that worked super well in the 80's but not so much now. I dunno who I would even cast now either... the cast was actually pretty good.

No thanks. I have a strict "I don't watch remakes unless you can give me a reasonable, thoughtful, and/or exciting argument for it's existence" policy.

So am I the only one who has seen war games 2?  where they already tried to do this and  move the whole thing to canada for some reason.  also if you've seen it you know the only person to make it to the second one is dr. Falkin, who seems completely different.

I also offer up eagle eye,  which seems similar robot/computer trying to take over.

I'm actually okay with this. The original War Games is decent, but not without its flaws. I can see something really interesting coming out of this if the right talent gets involved. That said, it probably won't happen, so yeah, great idea, but I'm sure the final product will be shit. Color me cynical.

Does WarGames really need remaking?

Does computer hacking still work in movies?

What is this, Anonymous: the Hackening? This won't work.

People don't fear an innocent hacker causing WWIII. They fear a malicious hacker smashing their credit rating or stealing their identity "for the lulz".
