SummerSlam is billed as the "Biggest Event of the Summer", and compared to
WrestleMania.
Michael Cole even used the phrase "the grand stage of SummerSlam" during the show. And you know what? This show was miles better than this year's
WrestleMania XXVII. Better than last month's
Money in the Bank? Well, no. But there's no way it could have been.
The show opened with an unannounced 6-man tag team match, and it was the perfect way to kick things off.
The Miz had not been scheduled a match for the show, although he is one of the hottest things going for the WWE at the moment. So putting him in action along with high-flyers like
Rey Mysterio,
Kofi Kingston, and
John Morrison was guaranteed to lead to an exciting, energetic match.
A match that surprised me was for the
Divas Championship which pit the champion
Kelly Kelly against the Glamazon
Beth Phoenix. I honestly didn't see this match going past five minutes with Beth squashing Kelly and taking the belt off of her. However, Kelly put up a great fight and actually took Beth down a few times with real wrestling moves. The finish was also beautifully done with Kelly flipping the Glam Slam into a pinfall. Kelly had recently lost points with me in her feud with the Bellas, but this definitely earned some of them back.
A match that was fun, but the result was disappointing was the No Holds Barred Match for the
World Heavyweight Championship. Although
Christian had won the title last month in a shitty way, he still deserved to get that long reign he was cheated out of last time (where he held the belt for two days). But once again,
Randy Orton had to be the champion. But, when
Edge showed up before the match just to belittle his "best friend", you knew there was trouble. The final spot with a flying RKO into the steel steps was brutal, but I still have a sour taste in my mouth that Christian was robbed of a lengthy reign yet again. And this feud is probably not over yet.
The main event was as great as I had expected. Last month's match between
CM Punk and
John Cena was an instant classic, and this match was excellent as well. With both men as champion and
Triple H preventing this match from ending without a winner, no one knew what would happen. This match was intended to end all controversy surrounding the championship, but it only made things worse. Triple H counted the three even with Cena's foot on the rope, and then after an unexpected attack by
Kevin Nash, Punk lost his title to Mr. Money in the Bank
Alberto Del Rio despite him never getting to his feet before the match started. The whole ending was a whirlwind of confusion and had me buzzing about for the next 24 hours. That is a sign that the show made an impact.
I highly enjoyed the show and love the roll the WWE has been on since the current CM Punk storyline started. Wrestling is exciting again.
