Was this movie a prequel or a reboot?

They never really dismissed anything that happened in the other movies, but at the same time, this one just felt different than all the others... So which is it?

I'd say it was a prequel, but honestly it makes no sense storywise if you compare it to the others.

It's kind of both. It has some aspects of a prequel but it also contradicts things in X2 and The Last Stand and Wolverine so one could say it's a reboot as well.

Reboot,

Xavier loses his legs at the end of this film.

But he is walking with Magneto at the start of X3

Well the continuity doesn't quite match up with what they had in the Wolverine movie so i'd suggest it was a reboot.

I think it's a Superman Returns-type of thing where they completely ignore the last couple of movies.

This. I don't think they really cared. It could be a prequel because they did have Wolverine in there but then again they decided to mostly follow the comic than the movies.

I think it's similar to the vein on Star Wars prequels, where it sort of reboots the franchise yet still being a prequel. There will be inconsistencies too as their is in star wars.

No, they pretty much just decided to mix and match continuities. Off the top of my head, these are the comic continuity errors that I can think of relating directly to First Class

  • Angel Salvadore didn't join the X-Men until New X-Men (Morrison's run on the book, not the Kyle/Yost run) and at that point, the entire 'first class' of X-Men (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman and Angel) had become either teachers at Xavier's or faculty advisers of some sort.
  • Havok is in First Class, which (if we assume that the movies are all in the same continuity), makes him a generation older than Cyclops, who in the comic books, is actually the older of the three Summers brothers (Cyclops, Havok, Vulcan).
  • In the comics, the first class is as follows: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, Iceman. In the movies, the only of these characters who appears in First Class is Beast. The others are all in the original three movies, but are at completely different ages and stages. Jean and Scott are both teachers. Iceman's a student and Angel is in the third movie as a sort of add-on student.

The X-Men trilogy itself doesn't strictly match up with Wolverine, either, though. Case in point is Sabretooth, who appears in the first X-Men movie, but who is not once recognized by Wolverine.

Sort of both. If you think about the continuity, it doesn't make sense. But they use actors and sets that harken to the original films.

He lost his memory from getting shot in the head in X men orgins remember?

I generally think of it as it's own thing as well. The timeline with Wolverine makes no sense as First Class takes place in the 60s and Wolverine was for the most part, present day. Also, Emma Frost is a teenager in Wolverine whereas she is grown up in First Class. Actually, if you think about it, neither First Class nor Wolverine fit in the main X-Men trilogy timeline at all. They're both on their own.

It was supposed to be a prequel but it was totally a reboot

It's a reboot, the continuity is all kinds of messed up if you count it as a prequel.

I think they intentionally left it in a spot where it could be either one going forward. The next film could be more of a link between the trilogy of X-Men films, or just be a sequel to First Class. I would accept either option, considering how fucking amazing that movie was.

I wasn't sure before but brought up a good point with X3's flashback versus First Class' continuity.

HOWEVER. There was that montage in First Class where they're looking for mutants (where the Wolverine cameo is) and it's possible they could've visited Jean Grey's house during that montage.

All of the above, Hugh Jackman makes it cannon in my opinion.

I guess I've kind of always assumed that the new continuity was First Class, X-Men, and X-2. They're very clearly ignoring Wolverine and all of the big inconsistencies that I remember in the continuity only exist in X-3.

The way I see it, it's a prequel to X1 and 2, the only other X-Men films with Bryan Singer's involvement.

It was a preboot.
