Robert Rodriguez was asked to direct it but he declined so Fox looked at Brian Singer who was looking for a Sci-Fi project at the time. HE turned the film down multiple times though beliving comics to be uninteligent literature but after watching the 90's animated series and reading some of the comics was impressed by the prejudice and fear surronding the mutants. In 1997 Fox annouced a Christmas release date for the film with the script merging several characters aspects into the chracter of Rogue but keeping with the idea of Magneto turning Manhattan into a mutant homeland. The X-Men film had been in production for nearly a decade in some form or another before filming began in 1999. The script had been rewritten multiple times from a wide ranging list of talents. Characters like Beast,Nightcrawler and Pyro and the Danger Room where all disscussed as being in the film but Fox refused to greenlight it with them in it costing 5 million to do Beast alone.Singer was ok with the loss of the Danger Room letting him focus on the team instead of just special effects shots. Eventually Fox green lit the budget at 75 million dollars with the film starting principle photography in September 1999 ending in March 2000. The film would eventually go on to gross $296,339,527.
X-Men recived generally favorable reviews with a Rotten Tomatos score of 82% and a metacritic score of 64 out of 100.
Kenneth Turan said that "so much is happening you feel the immediate need of a sequel just as a reward for absorbing it all. While X-Men doesn't take your breath away wire-to-wire the way The Matrix did, it's an accomplished piece of work with considerable pulp watchability to it."
Expressed X-Men fan James Berardinelli commented "the film is effectively paced with a good balance of exposition, character development, and special effects-enhanced action. Neither the plot nor the character relationships are difficult to follow, and the movie avoids the trap of spending too much time explaining things that don't need to be explained. X-Men fandom is likely to be divided over whether the picture is a success or a failure"
Famed movie critic Roger Ebert had a funny when describing his screening of the film he "started out liking this movie, while waiting for something really interesting to happen. When nothing did, I still didn't dislike it; I assume the X-Men will further develop their personalities if there is a sequel, and maybe find time to get involved in a story. No doubt fans of the comics will understand subtle allusions and fine points of behavior; they should linger in the lobby after each screening to answer questions."
The general public seemed to enjoy the film allowing it to gross $296,339,527 helping it spawn three more films and a spin off over the next decade. This is also the first of a new generation of high budget comic book films sparked by X-Men and Spiderman.
