Xena and Gabrielle have been crucified and Joxer wants to bring their bodies back to Greece. Meanwhile, guardian angels lift their spirits to Heaven but they are attacked by demons led by Callisto. Gabrielle plummets into Hell and Xena is rescued by archangels but she is determined to rescue Gabrielle.
While Xena and Gabrielle recover from their resurrection, Amarice presents Xena with her broken Chakram but she doesn't recognise it. Gabrielle realises that Xena has lost her memories and warrior skills. They resolve to restore Xena to her former self but the war gods Ares and Kal have other plans.
The warrior woman Mavican has ambitions of becoming Ares' right hand and thinks killing Xena will help her achieve this. Gabrielle is frustrated that Xena doesn't appreciate her prowess in combat. Mavican attacks Xena forcing Ares to intervene. He sends them to a woodland arena to decide who is worthy.
Xena, Gabrielle, Joxer and Amarice travel to Spamona. They meet Xena's old friend, Talia, a law enforcer who is dealing with a warlord that threatens the town. They also reunite with Arman who becomes mutually smitten with Amarice. Meanwhile, Xena learns that she is pregnant.
Xena has a premonition that something is trying to kill her unborn baby. They travel to see Yakut, Shamaness of the northern Amazons and discover that Alti is draining the baby's life force. Xena lacks the strength to confront her in the spiritual realm. Gabrielle insists on confronting her instead.
Xena finds a message from the long dead Lao Ma that refers to her book of power. They travel to the the land of Chin to retrieve it but encounter troops attacking the monastery where it's contained. Lao Ma's daughter, Pao Ssu, suddenly appears and helps them repel the attack.
Xena has a vision of battle in which Gabrielle and Joxer are killed. The land of Chin is still in danger and they return to overcome it. The spirit of Ming T'ien plans to conquer the lands and destroy Xena. His sister Pao Ssu reveals the secret of Black Powder.
Xena and Gabrielle discover Aphrodite is sheltering the sick in her temple. Xena finds Daphne, a young girl in a coma and wishes she could change places with her. Aphrodite rushes to comply before anyone can react but it goes wrong. Both Xena and Daphne inhabit Daphne's body.
Eli is spreading the word that people should abandon the idea of worhsipping the gods. Ares is worried that this may be the start of the Twilight. A time when people would no longer need the gods and they would lose their power. Ares plans to stop Eli.
Draco finds one of Terpsichore's Lyres on Amazon territory. The Amazons and Draco disagree on who should have it. Xena intervenes before they start fighting and insists they have a musical competition to decide who keeps it. Meanwhile Joxer meets his brother Jace but is embarrassed by his behaviour.
Gabrielle is suffering from writer's block. Aphrodite offers to help so Gabrielle starts by recounting the events of the day. She'd bet that Xena couldn't control her temper till the end of the day and she met Lachrymose, God of Despair, lamenting that nothing makes him laugh.
Zeus is frustrated with the Fates' prediction that Xena's baby will herald the end of the Gods' reign. He dispatches his personal guard, the Proxidicae, to kill it. Hercules joins Xena in defending her baby and must oppose his father to do so but finds an unlikely ally.
Warriors serving the gods are hunting Xena and her child Eve. Three Magi are sent to assassinate them. Xena and Gabrielle fend them off but Joxer was poisoned in the attack. Gabrielle must take him to be cured leaving Xena alone to protect Eve against relentless attempts to kill them.
Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, is besieging Xena's home village of Amphipolis. She plans to kill Xena's child, Eve, to prevent the Twilight that threatens the gods' existence. Xena and Gabrielle rally the village to defend against her army but Ares has an offer to protect Xena and Eve.
Discord, Goddess of Retribution, and Aphrodite, Goddess of Love are having a disagreement. Gabrielle is caught in the crossfire and is knocked unconscious into the water. When she awakes she discovers that she's a mermaid married to Hagar who strikingly resembles Joxer. They also have three aquatic kids.
Xena and Gabrielle travel to Yakut's Amazon camp to give Eve Gabrielle's right of caste, but they discover that Yakut has died defending the Amazons. Yakut's spirit summons Xena to warn her that the Amazons are in danger. She must reconnect them to their roots to prevent a needless war.
Joxer is caught spying on Amazons while they bathe. This is a crime under Amazon law and he awaits punishment. Meanwhile Gabrielle is tempted to remain as leader of the Amazon tribe and asks if Xena and Eve will join her in settling down.
Cleopatra is assassinated and Xena takes her place to seduce and manipulate the Roman General Marc Antony. She must keep Egypt safe from Rome and uncover the identity of the murderer.
Xena questions the Fates about her child Eve and the Twilight. They state that Xena must die before the Twilight will begin. Athena, Hades and Hephaestus lead a personal assault against Xena to kill Eve.
Xena and Gabrielle awaken from their secret slumber to discover that they have been asleep for twenty five years. They reunite with Joxer who is much older now and catch up with events. Rome has a brutal commander named Livia, mentored by Ares and recently announced as the Emperor's successor.
Livia continues her brutal campaign, punishing those she believes to be followers of Eli. Xena, Gabrielle, Joxer and Virgil attempt to track her down in the hopes that they can sway her from her evil ways while Ares opposes them.
Xena and Gabrielle help a remorseful Eve find her way. While Eve is forgiven for past sins by the Baptist, Xena is gifted with the ability to kill gods but Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, has a backup plan. She has tasked the Furies with turning Gabrielle against Eve.
