IGN confirms that Snyder will do a film that will parallel the new Star Wars trilogy that Disney has planned. The movie has been said to be based on the Seven Samurai, on which the original Star Wars was also based on. Production will not start until after episode 7 is released.

edit: The original Star Wars was based on the film Hidden Fortress, not Seven Samurai. The IGN writer made a mistake.

Snyder has just denied involvement with the franchise. Vulture, who gave IGN the news snippet, had this to say about the story:

"Vulture takes the accuracy of its reports very seriously. And while a piece published in The Hollywood Reporter this evening quotes Snyder's rep as saying that the director 'is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars,' Vulture stands by its story. This reporter heard through a source very familiar with the situation that Snyder recently flew up to Marin County to meet with Lucasfilm execs about the project. When subsequently reached by Vulture, Snyder's spokesperson would only repeat that he 'is' not currently involved. One should note the possible political ramifications here of our original story break: Snyder's last Warner Bros. film, Sucker Punch, lost millions for the studio, and execs there could have become distressed at the idea of him getting involved with another studio's franchise when they have so much at stake with their upcoming Man of Steel and want him available for an immediate sequel."

The original Star Wars was based on the Akira Kurosawa film Hidden Fortress not Seven Samurai

On one hand it's easy for me to be in THIS IS TERRIBLE MODE. on another a Seven Samurai or 13 Assassins styled movie built in the star wars universe sounds kinda awesome because who doesn't like lightsaber fights? Seven Samurai though is soooo much more than just fighting. After Watchmen I would of been easily sold on any movie Zack Synder did. Now after that owl movie, Sucker Punch, and well Man of Steel not exactly making me want to line up now, put me on the cautiously optomistic camp.

He has his own style and I wouldn't mind seeing a Star Wars with his flare on it. I think we all need to get used to the idea that Star Wars isn't this perfect few movies from our childhood's. It's a franchise and we're going to have to curate for ourselves which parts of the franchise we enjoy and dive into and which we ignore.

Plenty of SW fans think the books are crazy and stay away from them. I however love them. So it's all about perspective and acceptance of new things.

If this actually happens, it will be my most anticipated.

At some point every director will be rumored to be involved with new Star Wars. I can't wait until Darren Aronofsky and Alfonso Cuaron are part of the rumor mill!

Alfonso Cuaron may well be the best fucking choice for a Star Wars movie.

So I hope that day arrives soon.
