Zoe Saldana is an American actress from New Jersey who made her breakout performance in 2002's Drumline, but is currently best known to audiences as Anamaria from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the alien Neytiri in Avatar.
Zoe Yadira Zaldaña Nazario was born June 19, 1978 in New Jersey, the daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and Dominican father. When she was ten Zoe's family moved to the Dominican Republic for seven years and studied ballet during this time. Upon moving back to America, Zoe joined the Faces teen outreach theatre troupe and the New York Youth Theatre. After being acquiring a talent agent she was able to secure her film debut in 2000's Center Stage.
With a film under her belt Zoe dropped other engagements and focused on acting in movies, with 2002 being a watershed year for her due to high profile roles in Crossroads and Drumline. Her career took off in earnest after starring as Anamaria in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the major roles began flowing in, typically starring in three to four movies per year since 2003. Her biggest roles to date have been as Uhura in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot and blue-skinned alien princess Neytiri in Avatar.
