Background
Zorro is really the wealthy Don Alejandro de la Vega. The creator of Batman, Bob Kane said that Zorro was a direct influence on the creation of Batman. The similarities between that version of Batman and Zorro are rather noticeable, Zorro is really a wealthy womanizer and Batman is also secretly the billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne. Both are vigilantes clad in black as well.

The Mask of Zorro (1998)
Don Diego De La Vega, the original Zorro breaks out of prison to find his long lost daughter Elena and to avenge the death of his wife a the hands of the corrupt Governor of California. He trains Alejandro to serve as his successor for when he dies and to continue his mission but Alejandro has a vendetta of his own to carry out.
The Legend of Zorro (2005)
The year is now 1850, the people of California are voting to reject or accept statehood. Zorro, now a husband and a father goes after a gunman, Jacob McGivens attempts to steal the votes from an election deciding whether or not California will accept statehood and join the United States or remain a province. Zorro fails to catch McGivens but retrieves the votes and in the process his mask is torn off, two Pinkerton detectives see his face and recognize him as Don Alejandro De La Vega. Vega makes a makeshift mask and returns the votes to the governor.
Returning home he is greeted by Elena who thinks that he can now give being Zorro but he is still sure that the people need him. Angered over his neglect for her and their child she kicks him out of the house. The next day Elena brings their ten year old son, Joaquin to school, there she is confronted by the two Pinkerton agents who inform they know who Zorro is. Shortly after their meeting Alejandro is served with divorce papers from Elena.
Several months later Alejandro is now living in a hotel, depressed over his separation from Elena and not being needed as Zorro anymore. He is convinced by his childhood friend-Father Felipe to attend a party at a French count's new vineyard. Alejandro attends the party and finds Elena has been spending time with the count and former schoolmate of hers, Armand. Later, while out drinking Alejandro witnesses an explosion nearby Armand's mansion and becomes suspicious of his true intentions.
Soon after that McGivens and his gang attack the home of the Cortez family, close friends of Alejandro, in order to seize the deed for their land. Zorro is able to rescue Guillermo's wife and infant son but Guillermo is shot, with McGivens and his gang riding off with in his hand. Zorro then heads to Armand's mansion and conducts a stake out in order to confirm his suspicions. While there he finds out Armand wanted Cortez's land to build a railroad. During that time he also discovers that Elena has secretly been working for T=the Pinkertons, investigating Armand and she discovered that he was supposed to receive a mysterious shipment.
Zorro then tacks McGivens to a cove where Armand's cargo is being brought to. Nearby is Joaquin's class on a trip, Joaquin sees McGiven's gang and hitches a ride with them.
Personality
When played by Antonio Banderas, Zorro became a charming womanizer and less of a stiff like the previous versions shows him to be. Despite being a womanizer it didn't stop him from settling down with Elena Montero and having a child with her.
